Children all over the world are crazy about a new toy called the Kendama. Most people think it
was originally created in Japan, but some say it comes from sixteenth-century France, Greece, or
China. Its true birthplace is a mystery, however.
The Kendama is a bit like the Yo-Yo because it trains the eye, the mind, and the hands. You need
to be very quick and have good coordination to play with it. You can also do lots of tricks with it
and become the coolest kid on the playground. In Japan, the toy is no longer just for fun. In 1975, a
writer of children’s books, Mr. Fujiwara Issei, founded the Japan Kendama Association, and adults
and children alike started taking part in tournaments.
A good alternative to tablets and videogames, the Kendama also makes parents happy. However,
teachers might be less happy if you bring it to class!
