THE QUESTION

Discuss how characteristics of a research

title and how to develop a research title.
CONT.…
• According to Creswell (2009) states that

• “The topic of research is subject or subject matter of proposed study .

• The topic becomes the central idea to learn about or to explore”

• The topic or title of research is chosen by the researcher and not by adviser or committee member.

• This is true because the who is going to conduct a research is the researcher hence better formulate the
title and knows the needs of the title in order to structure and plan the study.(Creswell, 2009)
CONT.

• The research title is a crucial element of any

research project as it serves as the first point of
contact for potential readers, providing insight
into the focus and scope of the study

• Characteristics of a Good Research Title
1. Clarity:

• The title should be clear and concise, conveying the main idea of
the research without unnecessary complexity. Avoid jargon or
overly technical language that may be confusing to a broader
audience
FEATURES CONT.…
2. Research title is a concise and specific phrase
that summarizes the main focus or objective of a
particular research project. It details about what
the research is all about, what you did and your
result. (Creswell, p. 23)
CONT.…
3.Relevance

 The title should accurately reflect the content and objectives of the research.
It should be directly related to the research question or problem under
investigation.
4.Specificity

 A good title is specific and focused. It should give readers a clear idea of the
key variables, concepts, or populations involved in the study.
CONT.…

5.Originality:
 Aim for a title that is unique and stands out. Avoid generic or overly used phrases. An original
title helps your research distinguish itself in a crowded academic landscape.

6.Interest:
 A good title captures the reader's interest. It should spark curiosity and make someone want to
learn more about the research. Use words that evoke curiosity or emphasize the significance of
the study.
HOW TO DEVELOP A RESEARCH
TITLE?
According to Creswell (2009) states that a researcher has to draft a brief a title to
the study.
 The title has to be developed early in starting their research .The development of
the title becomes the major road sign in research-----the tangible idea that the
researcher can keep refocusing on and changing as the project goes on.
 A researcher has to frame their study in simple and easy language.
The problem may be because of reading many published articles (Creswell

Another way on how to develop a title would be posing a topic as brief question.
This means that what question needed to be answered in the proposed study of
research.
 For example, what brings people to tourist sites in the Tanzania? What does it
mean to be CBE Master Graduate in Tanzania Academician Society today?
When developing question like these, the focus should be on the key topic in the
question as the major signpost for the study.

• IN SUMMARY
1. Start Broad, Then Narrow Down:

 Begin with a broad idea of your research focus, and then progressively narrow it down to a specific topic. This process
helps you define the core elements of your study.

2. Identify Key Concepts:

 Identify the key concepts, variables, or themes in your research. These elements should be prominently featured in your
title to give readers a clear idea of what to expect.

3. Use Action Words:

 Consider incorporating action words or verbs into your title. These can convey the dynamic nature of your research and
make the title more engaging.
CONT….

4.Seek Feedback
 Once you have a draft title, seek feedback from colleagues, mentors, or peers. They can provide valuable insights and suggestions
for improvement.

5.Refine and Revise

 Be willing to refine and revise your title as your research progresses. As your understanding of the study deepens, you may find
ways to enhance the clarity or precision of the title.

6.Check Guidelines

• If you're submitting your research to a specific journal or conference, check their guidelines for title
formatting and length. Adhering to these guidelines is important for publication
CONCLUSION
 Remember that the research title is often the first impression readers have of your work, so
investing time and thought into crafting a strong and effective title is crucial for the overall
success of your research project.
For example, if a research project is examining the impact of social media on mental health in
adolescents, a suitable research title might be "The Influence of Social Media on Adolescent
Mental Health: A Quantitative Study." This title provides a clear indication of the subject matter,
the focus (social media and mental health), and the methodology (quantitative study).
