I Figured Out Why Sunscreens Give

Me Pimples. Here's What I Found…

Sunscreen is arguably the most important

part of one's skincare routine, but many shy
away from it. This is because, when it
comes to sunscreens, the biggest problem
people have with them is that they feel
heavy, oily, and make skin feel hot. For
many people, like myself, it also makes skin
feel clogged, resulting in breakouts. This is
often a deterrent for people when it comes
to even wearing sunscreen. Now, we all
know that neglecting to use your SPF is not
a good idea. As a retinol user with sensitive
skin which already has acne, I can’t avoid
sunscreen.

The ingredients to avoid are…

All those waterproof sunscreens which are

typically long-lasting and contain
ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone,
octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and
octinoxate. When you are buying a
sunscreen, look at the ingredient list and
see if any of these are there.

Now, get a sunscreen which only contains

ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium
dioxide. Are you still breaking out when you
use sunscreen which only has these two
and none of the above?

Not only that, look at your skincare or

makeup products with SPF. Chances are,
they also contain one of these ingredients.
This is because these chemicals mesh
better with skin-enhancing enzymes in
skincare, such as day creams, when
compared to other sunscreen ingredients
like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Only a specific type of sunscreen

gives you acne

The wide category these types of

sunscreens fall into are chemical
sunscreens. We have previously talked
about the difference between physical, or
mineral sunscreens, and chemical
sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens absorb
the sun’s UV rays, convert them into heat,
and that is how they protect skin.

For any kind of sensitive skin, be it acne-

prone or any other skin condition, chemical
sunscreens can worsen breakouts by
inflaming the skin further. This is because
these chemicals are built to react with UV
rays and turn into infrared radiation, which
these then try to disperse as heat. Hence,
rosacea or irritation-prone skin which is
already red, hot, and angry, is triggered by
this.

These sunscreens also make your skin

feel sweaty and hot

Now, most of us associate the heavy and

sweaty feeling after putting on sunscreen
with heavily formulated and thick mineral
sunblocks. But that’s not necessarily the
case unless you are wearing a very high
SPF, have applied too much, or are using a
product with emollients in it.

Chemical sunscreens, even ones like the

Neutrogena Dry Touch Sheer Block that
everyone seems to love, can also make skin
feel hot and thereby result in you sweating
a bit. It’s clear that their function itself is
that.

How to combat this

Using a lightweight physical sunscreen is

the best step forward if chemical
sunscreens are routinely messing with your
skin and breaking you out. However, if you
aren’t seeing any visible signs of irritation
but do experience sweating or your skin
feels hot when using chemical sunscreens,
you can do some after-care to keep things
cool.

For one thing, applying ice to the skin is a

great anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory
practice.

Then, using some chilled aloe vera gel to

the skin after a day of being out in the hot
sun can go a long way in soothing the skin.

Whether you break out because of

sunscreens or not, using one is a must, and
the above two post-sun practices can help
you cool off.
