How do you present a literature review?

The literature reviewed in the introduction should:

1. Introduce the topic.
2. Establish the significance of the study.
3. Provide an overview of the relevant literature.
4. Establish a context for the study using the literature.
5. Identify knowledge gaps.
6. Illustrate how the study will advance knowledge on the topic.

conclusion of this review of related literature.

Sample of Related Literature

Service-learning programs implemented in American undergraduate universities since

2000 have not only proven beneficial for the individuals or organizations being served but also
for the participating students by offering opportunities for academic, emotional, and social
growth.
Prior studies have identified many benefits for educational institutions from service-
learning programs. These benefits include positive perceptions of the university by the
community (Miron & Moely, 2006), enhanced student retention rates (Eyler et al., 2001),
positive teaching and learning outcomes such as greater student involvement and participation
in class (Caruso et al., 2007), and increased opportunities for meaningful research and scholarly
activities (Strand et al., 2003).
In this study and related research, the individuals serving are university students who are
collaborating with the community partner. The studied benefits to individuals serving include
cultural awareness sharing (Crabtree, 2008), as well as networking opportunities and application
of classroom learning to real-world issues (Bowen et al., 2009). Ultimately, service-learning
stimulates student learning and engages students in their surrounding communities. Service
learning creates new goals for students such as personal development, career development, moral
development, academic achievement, and “reflective civic participation” (Lamb et al., 1998).
These types of projects allow students to utilize material learned in the classroom to improve
societal conditions.
Integrating concepts and theories learned in the classroom with everyday life makes
students more capable of highlighting the importance of each course. Additionally, material
learned in business courses can be applied to benefit the community through a variety of tangible
services, such as business planning or marketing new programs. Service learning is an excellent
way for students to apply their course lessons to real-world situations and concurrently benefit
the community.

2. How did the writer of the sample related literature described the topic?
__________________________________________________________________________________
3. How many paragraphs are there in the body of the reviewed related literature?
__________________________________________________________________________________
4. Does the cited literatures in the body of the review of related literature support the description of
the topic stated by the researcher in the introduction?

5. So if yes, then rewrite the cited literatures to support the description of the topic.

related literature?

Activity 2

Directions: Read the presented related literature and re-arrange each paragraph according to the basic
format of a review of related literature (introduction-topic, body, conclusion).
Just simply assign number (1,2,3,4) in the box on the top center portion of each paragraph.
Then, answer the guide questions below.

The goal of this approach is to increase student attendance. Key features of the program include
relationship building, routine monitoring of alterable indicators, individualized and timely
interventions, long-term commitment, motivation and continuity regarding education, problem
solving, and affiliation with school and learning (Lehr et al., 2004). This intervention provides
opportunities for students to check in with an adult mentor on a regular basis. Students were able to
discuss school work, personal problems, social skills and any other issues that may arise (Lehr, et al.,
2004).

7|Page
Absenteeism is the common practice of regularly staying away from work or school without good
reason. This unacceptable doing is considered as issue that most school authorities are now facing.
However, they find an effective intervention in order to decline the increasing records of students’
absenteeism in their institution. One of the interventions implemented is the continues absenteeism
home base monitoring program. So far, the result is interesting and effective but requires statistical
basis to prove the initial observation of the program.

All the cited literatures therefore, suggest that all forms of intervention programs may decrease
the incidents of absenteeism, thus the implementation of the intervention program is necessary and
must continue, however there is still a need to conduct survey on how to improve the program for
clarification purposes on how extent is the impact of the program to the student and parents for further
evaluation.

There is a need for intervention programs especially in the early grades when habits, values, and
attitudes are formed (Baker et al., 2001; Chang & Romero, 2008; Lehr et al., 2004; Rush & Vitale,
1994). Research suggests several different strategies available to tackle the problem of student
attendance (Baker et al., 2001; Chang & Romero, 2008; Lehr et al., 2004; Logsdon et al., 2004;
Sheldon, 2007). For example, Lehr et al. (2004) reported that the Check and Connect model is a
program originally designed to increase graduation rates and assist middle school students with
learning and emotional/behavioral concerns by engaging students in school and learning.
