HARRYING OF THE
NORTH
During the winter of 1069, King William
launched large-scale attacks on the North to
make them pay for what they did to him.
William selfishly made the North pay a great
price such as a death toll of about 100,000
young and old Saxons. What made William do
ths? Well our two Northern earls Morcar and
Edwin along with Edgar Atheling just wanted to
challenge William’s unfavorable rule by causing
a rebellion in the North. They went to York to
destroy the castles as well as killed and took
hostages (but this was nothing compared to
what William was about to do). They gathered more people during their attack such as the
vikings who also wanted to possibly claim the throne. This angered William who came with his
army from his south to attack the rebels which he then negotiated with the vikings to leave
(which they gladly agreed). This cruel king then tracked down all the Saxons who just didn’t
support his rule then burnt and destroyed their homes. He burnt all the food and crops leaving
the poor Saxons nothing to live on during that cruel and harsh rule and winter. This brutal
monster killed a fine race of Saxons young and old for his own needs and purpose. He must go
down on history as a murderer for what he did to our fine race.
