Reading Comprehension: Poetry

Read the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, then answer the questions which
follow.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,


And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5

Then took the other, as just as fair,


And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same, 10

And both that morning equally lay


In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15

I shall be telling this with a sigh


Somewhere ages and ages hence:

I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. 20

The speaker took the road that looked less walked on and it meant that he chose
a different choice than others, but it’s a good thing

4. What is the main message in this poem? Give a quotation to support your

It discusses all of the emotions that come with needing to make a decision, and
how these choices can often lead us to having regrets or wondering what could
have happened differently. “I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made
all the difference”

5. Explain the explicit and implicit meaning of the poem? (3 marks)


Explicit – speaker takes a specific road out of a choice of two

The speaker is sorry that he could not experience both choices, as he must
choice one and accept his fate.
