Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither
whatever they do prospers.
Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to
be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and
pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do
not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your

Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding
banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they
refused to come.

“Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My
oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’

“But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants,
mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and
burned their city.

“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to
the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ So the servants went out into the streets and gathered
all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

“But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. He
asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless.

“Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will
be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King
Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where
is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star
when it rose and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem
with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests
and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to
be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the
prophet has written:

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least

among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will
shepherd my people Israel”

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the
exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and
said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him,
report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star
they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over
the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were
overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his
mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they
opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to
go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Matthew 8

When Jesus came down from the mountainside,

large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy[a]
came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are
willing, you can make me clean.”

3 Jesus reached out his hand and ed the man.

“I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he
was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to
him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show
yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses
commanded, as a testimony to them.”
