Art Deco

Reflection on Time:

The characteristic features of Art Deco reflect admiration for the modernity of the machine and for the inherent
design qualities of machine-made objects.

In a variety of industries including fashion, furniture design, art, and transportation. However, the movement is most
recognised for its influence on architecture and American buildings built during the 20s and 30s are some of the most

Designers look to historical sources for:

Art Deco designers drew on many sources in their bid to create a modern style. In the 1920s they looked globally to
the arts of Africa, Asia and Mesoamerica. Meanwhile, archaeological discoveries of the early 1920s fuelled an
appetite for historical romanticism and the imagery of ancient cultures.

From its outset, Art Deco was influenced by the bold geometric forms of Cubism and the Vienna Secession; the bright
colours of Fauvism and of the Ballets Russes; the updated craftsmanship of the furniture of the eras of Louis XVI
and Louis Philippe I; and the exoticized styles of China, Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt and Maya art. It featured
rare and expensive materials, such as ebony and ivory, and exquisite craftsmanship. The Empire State Building,
Chrysler Building, and other skyscrapers of New York City built during the 1920s and 1930s are monuments to the
style

Evaluation

How does your final game design reflect your design movement?
The pattern on the game board is copied from an artwork or image from
an art deco piece.
What were the successes you achieved when working in a partnership?
We had clear division of labor, and in cases where both of us had missed
classes, we helped each other, achieving a mutually beneficial outcome,
effectively doubling our efforts.
What attributes would you need to develop further if you needed to work
in a partnership again?
For future team collaboration activities, I may need to be more proactive in
expressing my ideas and creativity. This time, I didn't feel very involved in
the design because I didn't express myself, and many of my ideas weren't
implemented.
What elements and principles are strong in your design?
Lines, shape and composition are the main elements and principles.
The primary components of decorative art are orderly patterns
constructed from lines and shapes, relative simplicity, planarity, symmetry,
and unvaried repetition of elements.
