ABSTRACT Agroecology, a sustainable farming approach based on natural principles, enhances biodiversity by optimizing
species diversity and genetic resources. The Regional Biotrade Project in South East Asia, funded by Switzerland,
by Xavier,
Freya, Kelly,
promotes biodiversity conservation and livelihood improvement through sustainable trade in Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. Using a Market Systems
Development approach, the project facilitates growth and policy improvement. Despite the benefits of agroecology, challenges such as animal cruelty
and Jayden
persist, driven by companies aiming to minimize costs. Our research paper focuses on this topic, recognizing the importance of agroecology and 9D - Global
biodiversity in fostering sustainable farming practices, enhancing productivity, and improving food security. Perspectives

fertility management. It economically benefits countries by reducing reliance on
pesticides. While agroecology addresses social, cultural, and environmental
aspects, it doesn't fully replace biodiversity's role in maintaining healthy soils,
supporting pollinators, and controlling pests.

between plants, animals, and humans. It considers social and economic aspects of
food production. Biodiversity, encompassing plants, animals, fungi, and
microorganisms, is crucial for ecosystem and human health, offering benefits like
food, medicine, materials, and services.

AGROECOLOGY PRINCIPLES
There are 10 principles of
agroecology to sustain agriculture,
which are; diversity, synergy, co-
creation and sharing of
knowledge, efficiency, resilience,
recycling, human and social
values, culture and food traditions,
responsible governance, and
circular and solidarity economy.

BIODIVERSITY IN AGROECOSYSTEMS Agroecology is crucial for biodiversity as it

effectively maintains and stabilizes biodiversity
levels in its applied areas. By optimizing species and genetic diversity through stable living conditions for animals, it enhances their health and increases the value of meat
produced in larger quantities.

Agroecology Challenges:

CHALLENGES AND BARRIERS Historically, agroecosystems have resiliently met the demand for food by expanding
crop areas and increasing production per unit area to feed the growing population.
Biodiversity Conservation Barriers:
Habitat loss and fragmentation, worsened by projected climate change, pose significant threats to global biodiversity preservation3. Addressing connectivity is crucial as
habitat fragmentation exceeds species' dispersal capacities, impacting diversity.

CASE STUDIES & RESULTS This paper focuses on a case study involving Siam benzoin within the Regional
Biotrade Project in South East Asia, funded by Switzerland. The study examines
he biodiversity impacts of various Biotrade products in the region, including Siam benzoin, organic chili, Indian prickly ash, and jujube. Another
case study in this paper explores how soil and water conservation practices enhance harvests in the Tanzanian highlands. In regions with heavy
rainfall, agroecological interventions address food insecurity and soil protection. The chart illustrates the positive impact of integrating
agroecological practices into basic agriculture knowledge, yielding favorable results with minimal risks. Despite the sustainable and ethical
nature of agroecology, a prevalent challenge hindering widespread adoption is animal cruelty. Companies commonly resort to such practices to
minimize costs and time spent on animal welfare.

CONCLUSION This research paper highlights the pivotal role of agroecology in promoting sustainable farming practices and preserving
biodiversity. By emulating natural ecosystems, agroecology optimizes species diversity and genetic resources, fostering
environmental sustainability and improving soil health. Despite challenges like deforestation and market demands, agroecology remains committed to quality, biodiversity, and
sustainability. It serves as a potential solution to address climate change, habitat loss, and global food security challenges, creating a positive feedback loop between
agroecology and biodiversity. However, obstacles like cost limitations, time-consuming practices, and issues such as animal cruelty hinder widespread adoption. The paper
underscores the importance of Agroecology Principles and the need to overcome barriers to biodiversity conservation, including habitat loss and limited resources. Case studies
in Southeast Asia, particularly the Regional Biotrade Project, illustrate agroecology's potential to conserve biodiversity and enhance livelihoods. In conclusion, while agroecology
holds immense promise for sustainable agriculture and biodiversity preservation, concerted efforts are essential to overcome challenges and facilitate widespread adoption,
emphasizing ethical practices and addressing barriers to conservation and sustainability.
