Highlight:[ hahy-lahyt ] noun the area of most intense light on a represented form, as in a painting or photo-
graph.
Center Light: The main area of an object covered by a the light source. The direct light (also called the center
light) is the area of the form that faces the light source and receives the most direct light.
Reflected Light: Light that is coming from a source and being reflected off an object or surface to illuminate
another area.
Cast Shadow: Shadow cast by an object. An object’s cast shadow is the object’s adjacent shadow in which its
outline is distorted. Cast shadow is distinguished from core shadow in that it is slightly brighter, and its edges
are softer the further it gets from the object.
Occlusion Shadow: The darkest part of a cast shadow- an area that no light has penetrated.
Halftone: A tranzition between two values using a pattern. the reprographic technique that simulates continu-
ous-tone imagery through the use of dots, varying either in size or in spacing, thus generating a gradient-like
effect. “Halftone” can also be used to refer specifically to the image that is produced by this process.
Shading: noun, the representation of the different values of color or light and dark in a painting or drawing. a
slight variation or difference of color, character, etc.
Hatching (cross hatching)[ hach-ing ] A shading technique where layered directional lines going in a diaginal
checkered pattern create the illusion of a solid tone. Hatching and cross hatching are linear drawing techniques
that can be used to create texture, value, and the illusion of form and light.
Scumbling: A shading technique using small concentric cirlces to create a tone. To soften (the color or tone of a
painted area) by overlaying parts with opaque or semiopaque color applied thinly and lightly with an almost dry
brush.
Linear Hatching: A shading technique where layered directional lines create the illusion of a tone
Tonal Shading: Tonal shading refers to the lightness or. darkness of an object. It is done by setting down various
strengths of shading to demonstrate where an object is affected by the light and shadows.
Form Lighting: Light striking a geometric solid such as a sphere or a cube creates an orderly and predictable
series of tones. Learning to identify these tones and to place them in their proper relationship is one of the keys
to achieving a look of solidity.
