4. THE CAMWORKS NESTING LICENSE

This chapter deals with various aspects of the licensing for the CAMWorks
module for Nesting viz. CAMWorks Nesting. The following topics are covered in
this chapter:
 Evaluation License for CAMWorks Nesting
o Activating the Evaluation License
o Expiry of Evaluation License
o Extended Evaluation License
 The Permanent License
o Duration of the Permanent License
o Types of Permanent License
o Licensing methods for Permanent License
 CAMWorks License Manager (utility required for activating the License)
 Hardware Dongle License Driver (driver for reading Hardware Dongle)

License File
When you purchase CAMWorks modules from your CAMWorks Reseller, you will
receive a license file. This license file is programmed to run the CAMWorks
machining modules that you have purchased. The following information is also
embedded in the CAMWorks License File:
 Duration of the license (Perpetual or Time-bound)
 License Type (Standalone or Floating)
 Licensing Method (FlexLM Software Encryption or Hardware Dongle)
 CAMWorks Modules the user is licensed to run
 Number of licenses conferred for each module (only in the case of
Floating license)
The CAMWorks License Manager utility is used to activate the license file and also
to manage/edit the licensing mechanism. Once activated, the modules you are
licensed to run can be viewed in the Authorized modules tab of the CAMWorks
License Manager utility.
As the CAMWorks Nesting application is the module available under the
CAMWorks suite, the licensing mechanism for Nesting is identical to that of
CAMWorks.

20 The CAMWorks Nesting License

Installation & License Activation Guide

Evaluation License for CAMWorks Nesting

The license for the CAMWorks Nesting application can either be an Evaluation
License or Permanent License. An Evaluation License of 30-days duration is
available for all first-time CAMWorks Nesting users.

Activating the Evaluation License

When you run CAMWorks Nesting for the first time, CAMWorks Nesting will
verify your CAMWorks Nesting License. If a permanent license is not detected,
then an Evaluation License will automatically be activated from the current
date. Every time you run CAMWorks Nesting, a message will be displayed
indicating the number of remaining days for which the Evaluation License will
be active.

Expiry of Evaluation License

The Evaluation License will expire after a 30-day period from the date of
installation of CAMWorks Nesting application. Once 30-day period of Evaluation
License expires, you need to purchase and activate a permanent license in
order to continue using CAMWorks Nesting.
If you do not purchase a permanent license by the time the Evaluation License
expires, then the CAMWorks Nesting Add-in in the list of available
SOLIDWORKS Add-ins will be disabled.

Note: The 30-day Evaluation License for CAMWorks Nesting is a standalone

license i.e. it authorizes the use of CAMWorks Nesting only on a single
machine for a period of 30- days from the date of installation.

Extended Evaluation License

Users of CAMWorks Nesting Evaluation License can request for extension of the
Evaluation License by writing in an email to support@camworks.com. The user
will receive a license file for extending the Evaluation License. The CAMWorks
License Manager utility should be installed in order to activate the received
license file.
Extension of Evaluation License duration is solely the discretion of Geometric
Americas, Inc.

The CAMWorks Nesting License 21

Installation & License Activation Guide

The Permanent License

Once the Evaluation license expires, the CAMWorks Nesting application
requires a valid license for running. A permanent license for the CAMWorks
Nesting application can be purchased from your CAMWorks Reseller.

Note: The CAMWorks Nesting permanent license can be purchased only through
CAMWorks Resellers. Though the CAMWorks Nesting application can be
downloaded and installed from the CAMWorks website, the permanent
license required to run the CAMWorks Nesting application can only be
purchased only from an authorized Reseller.

Duration of the Permanent License

The Permanent license can be either perpetual or time-bound in nature.

Permanent license of perpetual nature

The permanent license you purchase from your Reseller is usually perpetual in
nature. This means that the license will never expire and you can continue
using the CAMWorks Nesting application forever. However, note that you need
to purchase a separate Update Support Plan (USP) from your Reseller in order to
receive latest updates for CAMWorks Nesting and to receive technical support.

Permanent license of time-bound nature

In specific cases, where a user specifically requests a license for a specific
time-period, a permanent license is issued with expiry date. Such licenses are
time-bound in nature and CAMWorks Nesting will not function after the expiry
date of the license. Users with such a temporary license need to renew their
license after the license expires in order to continue using the CAMWorks
Nesting application.
If you are running CAMWorks Nesting using a license that is time-bound in
nature, when fewer than 30 days remain for the license to expire, CAMWorks
Nesting will display a message indicating the number of days left for the
license to expire. When the license expires, you will be unable to use
CAMWorks Nesting. If you want to renew your license, contact your CAMWorks
Reseller. After renewing, you need to update your license using the fresh
license file provided.

22 The CAMWorks Nesting License

Installation & License Activation Guide

Types of Permanent License

Based on single-user or multi-user requirements, the permanent license can be
activated either as a standalone license (for single-user installations) or as a
Floating License (for multi-user installations).

The Standalone License

A standalone license (node-locked) authorizes the use of CAMWorks Nesting on
a specific computer. The standalone license employs licensing method of either
FlexLM Software or Hardware Dongle for activating the license.
 To learn how to activate the standalone license using FlexLM Software
licensing method, read:
Chapter 5: Activating the Standalone License using FlexLM Software.
 To learn how to activate the standalone license using Hardware Dongle
read: Chapter 6: Activating the Standalone License using Hardware Dongle.

The Floating License

The Floating license is ideal in environments when multiple copies of
CAMWorks Nesting module can be run simultaneously on multiple CAMWorks
Nesting client computers. One computer on such a network is designated as
the License Server. Other client computers will run CAMWorks Nesting by
accessing the floating network license on the server. The server computer can
also be setup as a client.
 To learn how to activate the Floating license, read:
Chapter 7: Activating the Floating Network License.

Licensing Methods for Permanent License

Two licensing methods are available for CAMWorks Nesting. Both the methods
have been designed to protect you and Geometric Americas, Inc. from
unauthorized use of CAMWorks Nesting.

FlexLM Software License

CAMWorks Nesting uses FlexLM Software License as the default licensing
method. This licensing method uses a Built-In software encryption technology
for generating licenses and can be used for both Standalone and Floating
licenses.
To use the FlexLM Software Licensing method, the CAMWorks License Manager
utility is required.
 To learn more about activating the standalone license using FlexLM
Software Encryption, read:
Chapter 5: Activating the Standalone License using FlexLM Software.

The CAMWorks Nesting License 23

Installation & License Activation Guide

 To learn more about activating the floating license using FlexLM software
encryption, read: Chapter 7: Activating the Floating License.

Hardware Dongle
A dongle (also referred to as a key or security block) is a small hardware device
that fits on the USB connector/port of the computer. This licensing method can
be used only for standalone licensing.
To use the Hardware Dongle licensing method, you must install the Hardware

5. ACTIVATING THE STANDALONE LICENSE USING

FLEXLM SOFTWARE
To use the CAMWorks Nesting application, you need to activate the license.
CAMWorks Nesting provides the following two licensing methods for standalone
licensing:
1. Software encryption: Built-in software encryption technology is the
default licensing method for CAMWorks Nesting. After you install the
CAMWorks License Manager, you must submit the request for a
CAMWorks Nesting license. You will receive a license file to enable your
license.
2. Hardware dongle: Optionally, a dongle can be used for licensing
CAMWorks Nesting. This hardware device is connected to the USB
connector on the computer.
Both these methods are designed to protect you and Geometric Americas, Inc.
from unauthorized use of CAMWorks Nesting.

Given in this chapter are the steps to activate a standalone (Node-locked) license
using FlexLM Software licensing method.

License File for Standalone License

The CAMWorks Nesting application requires a valid license in order to run it. To
activate standalone license or floating license using FlexLM Software License
that uses Built-In Software Encryption, you require a license file.
After you pay the applicable license fee to the CAMWorks Reseller, you need to
generate a License Request File on your system using the CAMWorks License
Manager utility. When you email this License Request File to Geometric
Americas, Inc., you will receive a license file. This license file is a text file with
a ‘.lic’ extension that contains encrypted licensing information. It is then
activated using the CAMWorks License Manager utility.

HARDWARE DONGLE
The Hardware Dongle (also referred to as a key or security block) is an
alternative form of Standalone Licensing for CAMWorks Nesting and prevents
unauthorized use of it.
Your CAMWorks Reseller will provide you with a Hardware Dongle if you choose
it as your Licensing method. This dongle is a small hardware device that fits on
the USB connector/port of the computer.

Given in this chapter are the steps to activate a standalone license using Hardware
Dongle Licensing method.

License File for Hardware Dongle

The CAMWorks application requires a valid license for running. To activate
standalone license using Hardware Dongle licensing method, you require a
license file. Your CAMWorks Reseller will provide you with Hardware Dongle
and the license file (with *.cod extension). The *.cod file contains licensing
information about the version(s) of CAMWorks that you are licensed to run.
This license file is activated using the CAMWorks License Manager utility.
When you renew your Hardware Dongle license, your CAMWorks Reseller will
provide you with a fresh *.cod file. You will need to update your existing *.cod
license file with the new file.

Note: The hardware dongle is essentially your license and you may want to insure
it against loss. If the dongle is lost or stolen, you will be required to purchase
a new license.

7. ACTIVATING THE FLOATING NETWORK

LICENSE
You need to activate the license in order to use the CAMWorks Nesting
application.
A floating license can be purchased for configurations intended to support
multiple users. The FlexLM Software licensing method is employed to activate
Floating licenses.
Given in this chapter are the steps to activate a Floating license.

License File for Floating License

CAMWorks Nesting utilizes FlexLM Software Encryption technology for floating
network licenses.
You need to generate a License Request File on your Server computer using the
CAMWorks License Manager utility. When you email this License Request File to
Geometric Americas, Inc., you will receive a license file. This license file is a text
file with a ‘.lic’ extension and contains encrypted licensing information
regarding the following:
− License duration
− License type
− CAMWorks Nesting versions you are authorized to run
− Number of floating licenses purchased for the CAMWorks Nesting module
This license file is then activated using the CAMWorks License Manager utility.

The Floating Network License

The floating network license allows multiple copies of the CAMWorks Nesting
application to be run on CAMWorks Nesting client computers. This Floating
license consists of two installation types: Server and Clients.
 Server - One computer on the network must be designated as the
license server. This computer is used to submit the license
request, install and run the CAMWorks License Service and
activate the floating network license. The Server computer
can also be set up as a Client. Such a setup allows you to
verify the activation of the license and optionally to run
CAMWorks Nesting on the server itself.
 Clients - The Client computers are set up to run CAMWorks Nesting by
accessing the floating network license on the Server.
Unlimited computers can be set up as clients on a network.

be installed on the Network Server computer and the license must be
activated before activating the license software on client computers.
 Location of License File: Do not save the CAMWorks Nesting License file
that you will receive from your CAMWorks Reseller in the CAMWorks Nesting
Program folder.
 Firewall: If a firewall is running on the server computer, the firewall may
need to be configured to allow the clients to see the CAMWorks License
Service.
 MAC Addresses: MAC addresses are identifiers assigned to most network
adapters or network interface cards by the manufacturer for identification.
To ensure that server license remains active, it is recommended that:
 The server computer should contain only one MAC address and it must
remain static.
 The server computer should not be moved or reconnected to the network
using a different method, e.g. wireless to hardwired, after the license has
been issued and is running.

Step 2: Requesting the License

After installing the CAMWorks License Manager on the server, you can apply

 In the Available column, the number indicates how many licenses are
currently available for the CAMWorks Nesting module. When 0
displays, there are no available licenses. When a number greater than
0 displays, then the client can access that particular license.
For example: If there are 20 licenses of the CAMWorks Nesting
module available on a floating network license of which 3 are being
used by client computers, then the Available column will display ’17’.
If all the 20 licenses are being used, then the Available column will
display ‘0’.
 The Module column lists the name of the licensed module (‘Nesting’ in
this case). A check mark in the checkbox next to the name of the
licensed module indicates that the module has been assigned to this
client. To access the functions of an available module, check the box
next to the available module.
 The Update Licenses button updates/refreshes the availability of
modules of Nesting modules when other clients release modules.
 The Start Up column functionality is applicable only for clients on a
floating network license. If a tick is placed in the checkbox of the
Start Up column, it indicates that the CAMWorks Nesting application
should be loaded as an Add-In whenever SOLIDWORKS/CAMWorks
Solids is launched (provided that a license is available).
 For example, consider that there are 20 licenses of the CAMWorks
Nesting module available on a floating license. If you want to use
one among the 20 available licenses to be activated automatically
when you load the CAMWorks Nesting Add-In, then place a check
in the checkbox of the Start-up column against the module named
‘Nesting’.
 If there are 10 floating licenses of the licensed module and all the
10 are being used by other client computers, then the license will
not be available when CAMWorks Nesting starts. The Available
column will display ‘0’ and the following message will be displayed:
One or more floating licenses that were requested are not available.

8. UPDATE SUPPORT PLAN

When you purchase CAMWorks modules (including CAMWorks Nesting) from a
Reseller, you will receive a permanent license required to run the CAMWorks
modules. In addition to this, you will also be enrolled in an Update Support Plan
(USP) for a specific duration. Your Reseller will brief you about the USP when
you purchase CAMWorks modules.
Being enrolled in the CAMWorks Nesting Update Support Plan has the following
benefits:
 Receiving updates: It allows you to keep your CAMWorks Nesting
application up-to-date with the new features and performance
improvements of CAMWorks Nesting released in the form of CAMWorks
Nesting Releases and Service Packs.
 Technical Support: You receive technical support for all your queries
and doubts regarding CAMWorks Nesting.
 Newsletters: Periodic newsletters and emails on current trends and
improvements in CAMWorks Nesting.
Once your USP expires, you will no longer receive updates or support. Ensure
that you repurchase an appropriate Update Support Plan from your CAMWorks
Reseller to continue receiving technical support and updates.

Note: The CAMWorks Nesting license you purchase from your Reseller is usually
perpetual in nature. However, the Update Support Plan has a fixed duration.
You need to repurchase an Update Support Plan after your current plan
expires.

Enrolling for an Update Support Plan

When you purchase the CAMWorks Nesting license for the first time, your
CAMWorks Reseller will enroll you in an Update support Plan for a specific
duration.
Once your Update Support Plan expires, you must enroll for a fresh Update
Support Plan to continue keeping your CAMWorks Nesting system up-to-date
with new features and performance improvements. Contact your CAMWorks
Nesting reseller and purchase to purchase a fresh plan.

Viewing the Expiry date of your Update Support Plan

The CAMWorks License Manager allows you to view the products and versions
that your license/dongle is authorized to run. It also displays the expiry date of
your Update Support Plan.
Before installing the latest version of CAMWorks Nesting, we recommend that
you view and verify the status of your Update Support Plan and License. If
required, renew the license and Update Support Plan.
You can verify the expiry date of your Update Support Plan using one of the
following methods:

Significance of the Expiry Date of your Update Support Plan

The Update Support Plan (USP) that you purchase is for a fixed duration, after
which, you need to re-subscribe for a fresh Update Support Plan.
As long as you have an active USP, you can install the latest CAMWorks
Nesting Releases and Service Packs. Hence, the date of expiry of your Update
Support Plan assumes importance.
 If your Support (USP) expiry date is a date later than the current date, then
it indicates that your Update Support Plan is active.
 If the Support (USP) expiry date is a date prior to the current date, then it
indicates that your Update support Plan has expired.
 You can install those CAMWorks Nesting versions/Service Packs with License
Version date prior than or the same as the Support (USP) expiry date.
 When there are only 30 days or less remaining for your Update Support Plan
to expire, a Reminder message will be displayed when you load CAMWorks
Nesting. This message indicates the number of days remaining for your
Update Support Plan to expire.
 In order to update an existing CAMWorks Nesting installation, you must
currently be enrolled in a CAMWorks Nesting Update Support Plan and your
software license must be programmed to run this release. You need to
contact your CAMWorks Reseller to re-activate your Update Support Plan
and receive a new license. Once you receive the fresh license file, update
the license. How to update the CAMWorks license is explained in the next
chapter.

License Duration
The License duration field at the top right corner of the Authorized Modules tab
in the CAMWorks License Manager Dialog box indicates whether your
CAMWorks Nesting license is perpetual or temporary in nature.

Update Support Plan 51

Installation & License Activation Guide

 If your CAMWorks Nesting license is perpetual nature, then the License

duration will be displayed as ‘Permanent’.
 If your CAMWorks Nesting license is time-bound nature, then the expiry
date of your license will be displayed in the License duration field in DD-
Month-YYYY format.

The Authorized Modules tab of the CAMWorks License Manager Dialog box

Note:
 If your Update Support Plan expires (indicated by the Support (USP) expiry
date), you can still continue using the licensed module (CAMWorks
Nesting) till the expiry date of your license (indicated by the License Duration
date).
 If your license is perpetual in nature, then you can use the licensed
module for ever.
However, in both the above cases, you can no longer avail the benefits
associated with the Update Support Plan unless you renew the plan.

10. UPDATING THE CAMWORKS NESTING

APPLICATION

CAMWorks Nesting Releases

New CAMWorks Nesting versions are released annually. Installing the latest
CAMWorks Nesting version allows you to keep your CAMWorks Nesting application
up-to-date with the new features and performance improvements.
The CAMWorks Nesting version released for a particular year will be installed in
a different folder from an existing previous release.
Example:
If you have CAMWorks Nesting 2014 installed on your system and proceed to install
CAMWorks Nesting 2015, then CAMWorks Nesting 2015 will be installed as a separate
CAMWorks Nesting version. None of the existing files for CAMWorks Nesting 2014 will
be overwritten. Both CAMWorks Nesting 2014 and CAMWorks Nesting 2015 will be
listed as separate Add-Ins within SOLIDWORKS/CAMWorks Solids. You can run either
version of CAMWorks Nesting by selecting the desired version from the
SOLIDWORKS/CAMWorks Solids Add-Ins.

CAMWorks Nesting Service Packs

Service Packs released periodically contain enhancements and bug fixes. These
updates in the Service Pack are intended to update specific files for an existing
CAMWorks Nesting installation.

Installing Service Pack

When a Service Pack is installed for the particular CAMWorks Nesting Release
version, existing CAMWorks Nesting files will be overwritten.
Example:
If you have CAMWorks Nesting 2015 SP0 version installed on your system and
proceed to install CAMWorks Nesting 2015 SP1.0 version, then it will overwrite the
installation files of CAMWorks Nesting 2015 SP0 version. Note that CAMWorks
Nesting 2015 SP0 and CAMWorks Nesting 2015 SP1.0 versions will not be installed as
separate installations. When you launch the upgraded version as an Add-In within
SOLIWORKS/CAMWorks Solids, only CAMWorks Nesting 2015 will be listed. The
Service Packs for the CAMWorks Nesting 2015 Release will not be listed as separate
Add-Ins.

Note: The latest CAMWorks Nesting installers and Service Packs are available
in the Downloads section of the CAMWorks website. Contact your
CAMWorks Reseller for availing the permissions required to access this
website.

License Version Date of CAMWorks Nesting Version

The ‘version’ of CAMWorks Nesting indicates the year of its release and the
service pack. For example, the version if CAMWorks Nesting released for year
2015 with Service Pack 1.0 will be CAMWorks Nesting 2015 SP1.0.
Each time a new CAMWorks Nesting version is released, a License version date
indicating the version of the installer is associated with it.

Significance of the License Version Date

The License Version date indicates whether you are eligible to use the updated
version of the CAMWorks Nesting application. If your expiry date of your Update
Support Plan (listed as Support (USP) expiry date in the CAMWorks Nesting License
Info dialog box) is greater than the License Version Date of the CAMWorks Nesting
version, then you are eligible for the update.
Example:
Suppose that the License Version Date of the new version of CAMWorks Nesting is
September 15, 2015 [20150915] and the Support (USP) expiry date for your

56 Updating the CAMWorks Nesting Application

Installation & License Activation Guide

CAMWorks Nesting license is May 01, 2016 [20160501]. Since the License version
date of the new CAMWorks Nesting version is a date prior to the USP expiry date,
you are eligible to install and run the new version.

Viewing the License Version Date

You can verify the expiry date of your Update Support Plan using one of the
following methods:
 The License Version date of a CAMWorks Nesting version is mentioned in the
ReadMe file. The ReadMe file for the version installed on your system can be
accessed from Start>>All Programs>>CAMWorksNesting 2015>>ReadMe.
 Open CAMWorks Nesting as an Add-In within the SOLIDWORKS/CAMWorks
Solids environment. Click on the Help menu and select CAMWorksNesting
2015>>License Info … The CAMWorks Nesting License Info dialog box is
displayed. The License version date is given at the top of this dialog box.

Note: For the CAMWorks Nesting 2015 SP1.0 version, the License version
date is September 15, 2015.

11. TROUBLESHOOTING
As a result of the complexity of the PC operating environment, conflicts and
problems may occur.
This chapter provides suggestions for you to resolve problems with respect to
valid license not being detected.

Topics covered
 Valid License not detected
 Basic Troubleshooting
- Where to download the latest CAMWorks Nesting updates and
installers
 What to do if the Troubleshooting Manual doesn’t solve your problem

Valid License not detected

When activating a commercial license as explained in Chapter 5 and 6, an error
message is displayed if a valid license file is not detected
This is a possibility if the license request file was created using remote
communication software. Remember to create a license request file directly on
the computer where the license will reside and then email it to us. Otherwise,
an invalid license will be generated.
In case you face still face an issue, email back to us at support@camworks.com
along with the necessary details. Our support team will ensure that the issue is
resolved.

Basic Troubleshooting
Some basic troubleshooting can save your time. If you can determine the
software or peripheral that seems to be causing the problem, you can contact
the applicable manufacturer for help. For example, if your mouse is not
functioning correctly, the problem may be caused by the mouse or by
Windows. You may be able to correct the problem quickly by contacting
Microsoft or the mouse manufacturer's customer support.

Before you email us for assistance, there are a number of areas you can check.
The following list is designed to help you discover common problems or direct
you toward problem areas that may have been overlooked. In some cases, your
problem may be caused by something as simple as a loose cable.

 Make sure your hardware and software meet the minimum

system requirements listed in Chapter 2.
Windows requires a considerable amount of computing power, memory
and disk space. When you try to run Windows applications such as
SOLIDWORKS and CAMWorks Nesting, you may find your computer is
unable to handle the demand.
 Make sure your hardware and peripherals are set up correctly
and you have the most recent critical operating system updates
and driver updates.
If Windows, the mouse, printer or video card is not operating correctly,
you need to troubleshoot Windows or the peripheral equipment, not
CAMWorks Nesting.
 Check all cable connections.
A loose cable may cause your problem.
 Consult your manuals and online help.
Read the manuals and the online help for your equipment and verify that
you have followed all the instructions.
For problems related to licensing, please refer to the Help file of the
CAMWorks License Manager utility. After opening the CAMWorks License
Manager Dialog box, this Help file can be accessed by clicking on the
Help button of this dialog box. Use the Indexes/ Table of Contents to
refer to the concerned topic.
