2. Apply web clamp and tighten until joints are closed (Fig. 2).
3. Verify squareness of assembly.

centers of screw holes.
5. Remove web clamp

Before finishing, remove any hardware already attached and disas-
semble the case as far as possible without disturbing glued joints.
Thoroughly sand all wood parts with progressively finer grades of
sandpaper. We recommend starting with 120 grit and finishing with
220. Alwavs sand with the grain of the wood. Be very careful not to
round over any of the edges. A sanding block is very useful for
sanding the large flat surfaces. As you finish sanding the parts, clean
them of all dust by vacuuming or using a tack cloth.
The wood can be painted, stained, or left natural as you choose. If
you are going to paint or stain the wood, we recommend that you
experiment with scrap wood or on the inside of the case until you are
sure of the results.
The wood must be sealed with a topcoat. This can be varnish,
lacquer, polyurethane, or oil. Completely finish all the wood parts.
This helps to prevent the wood from absorbing moisture which can
cause the parts to shrink and swell with changes in humidity. It is,
however, impossible to prevent the wood from shrinking and
expanding solely by coating the wood. The best way is to control the
humidity of the room the clock is in.
Take your time, be very careful, experiment where it won’t show, and
you will be rewarded with a truly handsome clock.
Note: If this is one of your first finishing projects and you are
unsure how to proceed to get the effect you want, we suggest
you obtain a copy of a good general book on wood finishing and
refer to it. Do not rush the finishing of your clock.
