Assignment 2
Answer the following questions:
Question 1:
a. The main factors affecting fatigue properties.
b. Explain the Mechanisms for wear.
c. Define (stiffness – toughness – corrosion – erosion – thermal conductivity).

Question 2:
A Charpy impact test was carried out on cast iron specimen, having the dimensions
of 10X10x55 mm and notch depth of 2 mm, the angle of fall was 170° while the
angle of rise was 166° without the specimen. When the specimen was fixed on the
anvil, the angle of rise registered 146°. The pendulum mass and arm length are 30
kg and 1.2 m respectively. You are required to determine:
1. Energy consumed due to friction and other resistances in Joules.
2. Energy consumed in rupturing the specimen in Joules.
3. The impact factor k in Joules per square millimeter.

Question 3:
A bar of copper 40 mm diameter is completely enclosed in a steel tube 50 mm
external diameter; a pin of 18 mm diameter is fitted transversely to the axis of the
bar near each end to secure the bar to the tube. Calculate the shear stress induced in
the pins when the temperature of the whole system is raised to 100℃, 𝐸𝑐𝑢 = 110
GPa, 𝛼𝑐𝑢 = 1.7 * 10−5 𝐾 −1 𝐸𝑠𝑡 = 210 GPa, 𝛼𝑠𝑡 = 1.17 *10−5 𝐾 −1

Question 4:
1. Explain in details the strategy for materials selection using different
Materials Indices and Ashby Plots:
2. Select different components such as; engine, valves, car body, tiers, windows,
sensors, chaises,
3. Use the Young’s modulus – Density (E-_ρ chart)
3.1. A component is at present made from a brass, a copper alloy. Use the Young’s modulus
– Density (E-_ρ chart of Figure to suggest three other metals that, in the same shape,
would be stiffer. “Stiffer” means a higher value of Young’s modulus.
3.2. Use the E-ρ chart of Figure 4.3 to identify metals with both E >100 GPa and E/ρ > 0.02
GPa/(kg/m3).
3.3. Use the E-ρ chart of Figure 4.3 to identify materials with both E > 100 GPa and E1/ 3 /
ρ > 0.003 (GPa)1/3 /(kg/m3). Remember that, on taking logs, the index M= E1/ 3 / ρ
becomes Log ( E ) = 3 Log (ρ )+ 3 Log (M )
