CES.E. 337 Homework #2

Due: 12/2/2018 (Sunday) at 8:30 a.m.

1) Derive a relation for the critical radius of insulation for a sphere.

2) A 2.5 cm inside diameter pipe is being used to convey a liquid food at 80 oC. The inside
convective heat transfer coefficient is 10 W/m2. oC. The pipe (0.5 cm thick) is made from steel
(k=43 W/m. oC). The outside convective heat transfer coefficient is 100 W/m2. oC with a
temperature of 20 oC. Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient and the heat loss from 1 m
length of pipe.
3) Calculate the percentage increase in heat flow when placing a number of Aluminium fins on a
flat surface. The height of each fin equals to 50 mm and the thickness is 0.5 mm. The distance
between fins equals to 3.5 mm and the number of fins equals to 250 fins per meter. The heat
transfer coefficient from the surface and fins to air equals to 40 W/m2. oC and the thermal
conductivity for Aluminium equal to 200 W/m. oC. Calculate efficiency and effectiveness for
these fins. Given that the temperature distribution for these fins as follows:

𝜃 cosh 𝑚(𝐿 − 𝑥)
=
𝜃𝑜 cosh 𝑚𝐿
4) A thin rod of length (L) has its two ends connected to two walls which are maintained at
temperatures (T1) and (T2) respectively. The rod loses heat to the environment at (T∞) by
convection. Derive an expression for the temperature distribution in the rod and an expression
for the total heat loss?
5) A turbine blade 6.3-cm-long, with cross-sectional area A = 4.6×10–4 m2 and perimeter
P = 0.12 m, is made of stainless steel (k = 18 W/m K). The temperature of the root, TS, is 482°C.
The blade is exposed to a hot gas at 871°C, and the heat transfer coefficient h is 454 W/m2 K.
Determine the temperature of the blade tip and the rate of heat flow at the root of the blade.
Assume that the tip is insulated.
