TUTORIAL SHEET – 6
1) A wall is fitted with a rectangular fin of thermal conductivity 50 W/m0C and thickness of fin 5mm.The
length of the fin is36mm. The atmospheric temperature is300C and the unit surface conductance is h= 200
W/m2 0C. If the fin base temperature is 2500C, find out the heat dissipation possible from 1m width of the
fin.

2) Find the heat loss from the surface of a rectangular fin of length 20mm, breadth 20mm and thickness
2mm. Assume that the heat loss from the fin tip is negligible. Take K= 45 W/m0C for fin material and
convective heat transfer coefficient to be 15 W/m2 0C. One end of the fin is maintained at a temperature of
2200C and the surroundings is at 200C.

3) The handle of a ladle used for pouring molten lead at 3270C is 300mm long and is made of 25×15mm
mild steel bar stock (K=37 W/m0C). In order to reduce the grip temperature, it is proposed to make a
hollow handle of mild steel plate 1.5mm thick to the same rectangular shape. If the surface heat transfer
coefficient is 12.5 W/m2 0C and the ambient air is at 270C, estimate the reduction in the temperature of the
grip. Neglect heat transfer from the inner surface of the hollow shape.

4) The temperature of the air in a reservoir is measured with the aid of a Hg in glass thermometer is
placed in a protective well filled with oil as shown in figure. The thermometer shows a temperature of
840C. How large is the measurement error due to the transfer of heat conduction along the well, if the
temperature at the base of the well is 400C.The well is 120mm long and 1.5mm thick, the K for the
material of the well is 48 W/m0C and the local heat transfer coefficient from the air to the well is 20 W/m2
0
C.

5) The superheated steam is flowing through a tube of 95mm diameter. The temperature of the steam is
measured by putting an iron well of 1.5cm diameter for the thermometer. The steam has a temperature of
3200C. The flow velocity of the steam is 20m/s. Find out the length of the well which gives maximum
1.5% error in temperature measurement, heat transfer coefficient between steam and thermometer is 80
W/m2 0C, thickness of well-wall(δ) is 1mm, tube wall temperature =1200C, K for tube wall metal in 45
W/m0C.

6) What is the minimum length of the thermometer well necessary to ensure an error of 2% of the
difference between the thermometer temperature and the fluid temperature? Assume the fluid flowing is
steam at a temperature of 3200C and heat transfer coefficient steam and tube wall in 100 W/m2 0C. The
well is 20mm in diameter and made of 0.8mm thick steel for which K is 28 W/m 0C. Tube wall
0
temperature =120 C

7) In order to reduce the thermal resistance at the surface of a vertical plane wall (500×500) mm, 100 pin
fins are attached(10mm diameter and 100mm long). If the pin fins are made of copper having a thermal
conductivity of 300 W/m0C and the value of the surface heat transfer coefficient 15 W/m2 0C. Calculate
the decrease in thermal resistance. Also calculate the consequent increase in the heat transfer rate from the
wall if it is maintained at a temperature of 2000C and the surroundings are to be at 300C. Assume the tip
to be insulated.
8) 15 thin brass fins (K=65 W/m0C) of a 0.4mm thick are placed axially on a 50mm diameter cylinder
which stands vertically and is surrounded by air at 400C. The fins extends 25mm from the cylinder
surface. The heat transfer coefficient on the surface of the fin is 20 W/m2 0C. What is the rate of heat
transfer to the air per meter length of the cylinder when its surface is at 1500C.

9) Three rods, one made up of glass (K=0.9 W/m0C), one pure aluminium (K=196 W/m0C), and one
wrought iron (K=49 W/m0C) all 20mm diameter, 300mm long and are heated to a temperature of 300 0C
on one end. The rods extend into air at 300C and if the surface heat transfer coefficient is known to be 7.8
W/m2 0C, find i) the distribution of temperature if the heat flux from the ends may be neglected. ii)The
total heat flow from the rods under the same conditions and iii)the heat flow rate from the rods , if the heat
flux from the ends is not neglected .

10) A centrifugal pump is used to pump liquid metal, has a solid stainless steel shaft (K=18 W/m0C)
30mm in diameter. The shaft in 600mm long , has its first bearing located 100mm from the hot impeller
which is immersed in liquid metal at 6000C.What will be the temperature of the bearing if the shaft is
cooled by air 400C. Assume the shaft surface heat transfer coefficient to be 16 W/m2 0C.

11) Two long rods of thermal conductivity KA and KB and of same c/s are protruded from the same heat
source of temperature T0. If the convective heat transfer coefficient between the surface and the ambient
is same for both the rods and is equal to h. Show that KA can be determined by recording the temperature
at the same point x=x1, in each rod and is given by
KA=[ln[(T0-Tf)/(TBx-Tf)]/ln[(T0-Tf)/(TAx-Tf)]]2 KB
Where TAX, and TBX, are the temperatures of the rods A and B at the same point x= x1.

12) One method of finding K of a rod (KA) is to measure the temperature of two rods A and B both
protruding from the heat source of the temperature T0 and both of same c/s. The temperatures measured
on the two rods are such that TAX1=TBX2 where TAX1 is the temperature of the rod A at x=x1 and TBX2 is the
temperature of the rod B at x=x2. Obtain an equation for KA in terms of x1, x2 and KB.

13) One end of a long, slender rod is inserted into a furnace with the other end projecting into the outside
air. After steady state is reached, the temperature of the rod is measured at two points 100mm apart and
found to be 1750C and 1250C when the ambient air is at 250C. If the rod is 10mm in diameter and heat
transfer coefficient is 5 W/m2 0C what is the thermal conductivity of the rod?

14) One end of an infinitely long rod is inserted into an enclosure maintained at a temperature of 85 0C by
an electric heater of capacity 30 watts. The diameter of the rod is 60mm. The ambient air temperature is
250C. After steady state is attained temperatures are measured at two points 120mm apart and found to be
650C and 540C. Estimate the value of the K of the rod material and convective heat transfer between the
rod surface and ambient air.

15) Obtain the temperature distribution for a rod whose both ends are maintained at a constant
temperature of T0. Also determine the position in the rod at which the temperature is a maximum.
Determine the maximum temperature. Assume the ambient temperature to be Tf and the surface heat
transfer coefficient to be ʿhʾ.

16) Derive an expression for the overall heat transfer coefficient across a plane wall (thickness b, thermal
conductivity K) having rectangular fins on both sides. Given that over an area A of the wall, the bare
areas on the two sides not covered by fins are Au1 and Au2, the surface areas of the fins are Af1 & Af2 , the
effectiveness are Ø1 & Ø2 & the heat transfer coefficients are h1 & h2.
17) Calculate the effectiveness of the composite pin fin as shown in the figure. K 1=15 W/m0C, K2=45
W/m0C, h=12 W/m2 0C.
