SUB: HEAT TRANSFER [ME0424] SEM : VI ‘A’ & ‘B’ Sec.

TUTORIAL SHEET – 3

1) Calculate the rate at which heat is being lost to the surroundings/unit length of an insulated
steam pipe having the following dimensions and specifications: Inner diameter of the
pipe=30mm; thickness of the pipe=2mm; Thickness of insulation=10mm; Heat Transfer
coefficient on inside surface=10 W/m2-K; Heat Transfer coefficient on outside surface=10
W/m2-K; Temperature of steam=1000C; Temperature of surroundings=250C; K for pipe
material=15W/m-oK and K for insulation= 0.5W/m-oK

2) Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient (based on inside diameter) for a steel pipe
covered with fiberglass insulation. The following data are given: I.D. of the pipe=20mm;
thickness of the pipe=2mm; thickness of insulation=20mm; H.T. coeff. Based on inside
surface=10 W/m2 0K; H.T. coeff. Based on outside surface=5 W/m2 0K; K for insulation= 0.05
W/m 0K and K for steel=45 W/m 0K

3) A hot fluid at 3000C flows through a metal pipe 3mm thick and 1m outside diameter. The pipe
is insulated with mineral wool such that the surface temperature does not exceed 500C.
Determine the outer diameter of the insulated pipe if the atmosphere temperature is 250C.
Given: hi=25 W/m2 0K,h0=10 W/m2 0K, K(pipe)=40 W/m 0K and K(wool)= 0.045 W/m 0K

4) A gas filled tube has 2mm inside diameter and 250mm length. The gas is heated by an electric
wire of diameter 50microns located along the axis of the tube. Current and voltage drop across
the heating element are 0.5A and 4V respectively.If the measured wire and inside wall
temperatures are 1750C and 1500C respectively, find the thermal conductivity of the filling tube.

5) Standard C.I. pipe (inner diameter=50mm and outer diameter=55mm) is insulated with 85%
magnesium insulation (K=0.02 W/m 0K). Temperature at the interface between the pipe and the
insulation is 3000C. The allowable heat loss through the pipe is 600W/m length of pipe and for
the safety the temperature of the outside surface of insulation must not exceed 100 0C. Determine
i) minimum thickness of insulation required and ii) the temperature of inside surface of the pipe
assuming its K=20 W/m 0K.

6) Show that for a single layered cylinder the equation for the rate of heat transfer of the plane
wall can be used, if one uses for the plane wall area, the log mean area of the inner and outer
cylindrical areas ie, Am= (A2-A1) / ln(A2/A1)
7) Heat is being transferred from hot oil to cold water in a shell and tube heat exchanger shown
in Fig.1. The heat transfer coefficient on the water side is 140 W/m2 0K and on the oil side it is
150 W/m2 0K. The pipes are made of galvanized iron. Unfortunately the rate of heat transfer is
very inadequate and the oil is not being cooled sufficiently. The engineer in charge decides to
make the pipes out of copper (it has a very high thermal conductivity) instead of the galvanized
iron, in order to increase the heat transfer rate. Explain whether the engineer made a good or bad
decision. Assume K for the GI tube as 30 W/m 0K

8) Hot gas at a constant temperature of 4000C is contained in a spherical shell (2000mm ID,
50mm thick) made of steel (K=30 W/m 0K). Mineral wool insulation (K=0.06 W/m 0K) of
thickness 100mm is wrapped all around it. Calculate the steady state rate at which heat will flow
out if the outside air is at a temperature of 300C. Assume that the value of the H.T. coeff. on the
inner surface of the steel shell and on the outer surface of the insulation is 15 W/m2 0K. Also
determine the surface temperatures for the steel and also for the insulation.

9) Consider a hollow steel sphere of inside radius 100mm and outside radius 200mm. The K for
steel is 10 W/m 0K. The inside surface is maintained at a uniform temperature of 2300C and the
outside surface dissipates heat by convection with a H.T. coeff. of 20 W/m 2 0K into the ambient
at 300C. Determine the thickness of asbestos insulation (K=0.5 W/m 0K) required to reduce the
heat loss by 50%.

10) Show that for a single layered sphere the equation for the rate of heat transfer of the plane
wall area can be used if one uses for the plane wall area Am as square root of product of the inner
and outer areas.

11) A hollow aluminium sphere with an electrical heater in the centre is used to determine the
thermal conductivity of the insulating materials. The inner and outer radii of the sphere are
150mm and 180mm respectively and testing is done under steady state conditions with the inner
surface of the aluminium maintained at 2500C. In a particular test a spherical shell of insulation
is cast on the outer surface of the aluminium sphere to a thickness of 120mm. The system is in a
room where the air temperature is 200C and the convective heat transfer is 30 W/m2 0K. If 80W
are dissipated by the heater under steady state condition, what is the thermal conductivity of the
insulating material?
