Student Name: Rim

Assignment: Patterns and Electrical Forces Project

Directions: Conduct the pepper and water experiment discussed in the lesson but vary
one of the variables present in the experiment. Then create an informal report.

The informal lab report should contain the following components:

Question What are the variables you are testing?

Write the question to be answered during the experiment.

Hypothesis What do you think will happen and why?

Predict the answer to your question and write this as an “if/then

statement”. For example: If (this is done)……., then (this will be
the outcome).
Materials What materials will you use?

List all of the materials used in the experiment.

Procedure What will you do?

Make a numbered list of steps that someone else could follow

to do the same experiment that you did.
Data Include a professional-looking and accurate representation of
the data in tables and a graph if appropriate.
Conclusion/Discussio What did you conclude from the experiment? Was your
n hypothesis supported?

Use your data to support or refute your hypothesis. Explain the

scientific reasoning behind your conclusions.

Question:

 What effect does different types of water have on the growth of plants?

Hypothesis:

 If plants are watered with different types of water, then the plants will grow differently.

Materials:

 Different types of water (tap water, filtered water, distilled water, etc.)
 Plants
 Potting soil
 Pots
 Measuring tape

Procedure:

1. Fill each pot with potting soil.

2. Plant a seedling in each pot.
3. Water the plants with different types of water, making sure to label each pot.
4. Measure the height of the plants every week.
5. After 6 weeks, compare the growth of the plants.

Data:
Type of water Plant height (cm)

Tap water 15cm

Filtered water 20cm

Distilled water 17cm

Conclusion/Discussion:
The data shows that the plant watered with filtered water grew the tallest, followed by the plant
watered with distilled water. The plant watered with tap water was the shortest. This supports the
hypothesis that different types of water will affect the growth of plants.
