The Water Experiment for 2nd Grade Objective: To use science process to study the importance of water in photosynthesis.

1. Ask a question: Are different types of water going to affect the growth of plants? 2. Research: a. What types of things will you use to water your plants? b. What type of plant will you use to test your question? c. How long will your experiment need to be? 3. Hypothesis: I predict that the different watering treatments (circle one) will/will not affect the grown the plants. 4. Experiment: We will test 4 different watering treatments 1. Childrens Garden Tap water 2. Childrens Garden Pond water 3. School Tap water 4. Choose one of the following: Coca-Cola, Gatorade, Lemon Juice, Mountain Dew 5. Collect Data: Date Seed Germination (number of seeds) CG Tap CG Pond School Tap 4th Choice

Optional data collection procedures: Describe the roots and leaves Measure root length Measure shoot length Post questions and photos on the Wonder Wall Calculate percent germination Plot percent germination against time

Plot number of germination against time

6. Explain Data Was your prediction correct? Based on your data, do different types of water affect plant growth? What did you learn about plant growth and the type of liquid provided to the plant? What did you learn about the needs of plants? How could this information help you in the future? 7. Ask new question What could the next experiment be?
