Emergency Medical
services definition

A national network of services


coordinated to provide medical
assistance to preserve life,
prevent further injury and
promote recovery.
EMS in Kuwait

1. Emergency medical services, Ministry of Health.( 95% of


cases)
2. Emergency medical services of the Armed Force.
3. Emergency medical services of the Oil Company.
4. Emergency medical services of private hospital
Consist of Operation unit and Ambulance unit.
1.Operation unit:
Consist of 2 call centers
a) Emergency dispatch room
b) Non- emergency dispatch room (inter-hospital
transport).

Consist of 2 crews :
a) Emergency medical technician (EMT)crew.
b) Paramedic.

Chest pain is the most common presentation.
How good is the EMS system?

• EMS systems are measured and compared through


operational and clinical outcomes.
• 1.Operational outcomes include: equipments, response
time, staff..etc
• 2.Clinical outcomes :
• Out of hospital cardiac arrest survival rate.
• Acute Cornoary Syndrome (Acs) Recognition And
Management.
• Acute Stroke Recognition And Management.
• Return Of Spontaneous Circulation (Rosc).

Role of the EMT

a. Should be prepared for emergency calls with knowledge, skills and


equipment.
b. Respond to the scene in a safe and timely manner.

Scene time:
-Medical case: <15 minutes - trauma case: <10
minutes

b. Assess and stabilize the patient per EMS protocol.


c. Prevent secondary injuries.
d. Transport the patient.
e. Documentation and reporting.
EMT competencies

• Basic Life Support


• AED, supraglottic airways, suction, airway adjuncts
• Buccal/IM/IN medications
• Continous Postive Airway pressure devices (CPAP).
