Figure 1 and Figure 2 both show examples of conflict surrounding the legalization of house
boats on Grasmere lake. For this example there are two sides, the locals disputing the new
houseboats, and the potential new houseboat owners. I believe that these two sides (the
locals and the potential boat owners) have different perspective and therefore a different
place meaning. For the locals, they have seen Grasmere lake without houseboats on it, to
them Grasmere lake is "beautiful" and tranquil. If lots of the locals have been around
Grasmere lake for long periods of time, their place meaning for Grasmere is that of a natural
lake. In contrast the potential boat owners have not been around Grasmere lake every day of
their lives and so the place meaning for them is different. Their understanding is not.
Similarly to this the 911 memorial ground zero has many different place meanings based on
perspective. for example, a parent who has lost a child might hate the 911 memorial, or they
may feel sad, or angry at how it has been designed for tourists. But a younger tourist who
didn't witness the attack might enjoy the tourist based attractions inside the memorial
grounds, they may still feel sorrow but not as intense as the parent.
Overall I fully agree that place meaning is different for different perspectives as different
people associate different memories and feelings with different places.
