What is an adverb?
Adverbs in English, once again, are an important
part of a sentence that are used to provide
additional information to a verb, adjective or
other adverb. Adverbs help us better
understand how, where, when, to what extent,
and how often an action occurs.
Adverb Function
1. Modifying Verbs
Adverbs help explain how or why an action occurs.
Examples of adverbs as verb modifiers:

She sings beautifully ==> beautifully is an adverb that


modifies the verb sings
2. Modifying Adjectives
Adverbs can also be used to provide additional
information about adjectives. Examples of adverbs as
adjective modifiers:

He is extremely tall ==> extremely is an adverb that


modifies the adjective tall
3. Modifying Adverbs
Sometimes adverbs are used to provide additional
information about other adverbs. Examples of adverbs as
adverb modifiers:

He walks quite slowly ==> quite is an adverb that modifies


the adverb slowly

" From the few examples of adverb
sentences above, we can see that there
are several different uses of adverbs . So,
friends, there are several types of adverbs.
Here are seven types of adverbs that are
commonly used in English.

1 Adverb of Manner
Adverbs of manner are used to explain how
an action is carried out. Examples of adverb :
slowly , happily , carefully . If applied in a
sentence it becomes:

My sister and I are always late because she


drives very slowly .

2 Adverb of Place
Adverbs of place are used to explain where
an action occurs. Examples of adverbs :
here (here), there (there), everywhere
(everywhere). If applied in a sentence it
becomes:

Her whole family moved to Surabaya and they


live there now.

3 Adverb of Time
Adverbs of time are used to explain when an
action occurs. Examples of adverbs : now
(now), yesterday (yesterday), soon (soon). If
applied in a sentence it becomes:

I can finish all of my tasks and go home early.

4 Adverbs of frequency
Advebrs of frequency are used to explain how
often an action occurs. Examples of adverbs :
always , often , rarely . If applied in a
sentence it becomes:

My parents frequently check up on their


health at the hospital.

5 Adverbs of degree
Adverbs of degree or level adverbs are used
to provide information about the level or
extent to which an action is carried out.
Examples of adverbs : very (quite), quite
(quite), extremely (very).

We don't have much money, but it doesn't


stop us from being happy.

6 Interrogative Adverb
Smart Friends, it turns out that adverbs can
also be in the form of question words, you
know! Examples of adverbs in the form of
question words include how, when, why, and
where. Example of this adverb sentence :

Why are you here?

When is it going to stop?

Conjunctive Adverb
Conjunctive adverbs function as transition
words that combine and link independent
clauses. Examples of these adverbs include
accordingly, alternatively, certainly,
accordingly, finally, nevertheless, moreover,
previously, therefore, and so on. Examples of
adverb sentences as transitions:

I can't leave the house today, therefore I


delegate the meeting to the vice president.

She speaks softly. (Dia berbicara dengan lembut) [adverb of manner]

The book is here. (Buku itu ada di sini) [adverb of place]

I will see him tomorrow. (Aku akan bertemu dengannya besok) [adverb of time]

They often go to the beach. (Mereka sering pergi ke pantai) [adverb of frequency]

He is very tall. (Dia sangat tinggi) [adverb of degree]

He rarely eats fast food. (Dia jarang makan makanan cepat saji) [adverb of frequency]

The car is extremely fast. (Mobil itu sangat cepat) [adverb of degree]

They laughed loudly at the joke. (Mereka tertawa keras karena lelucon itu) [adverb of manner]

manner]

They often go swimming in the lake. (Mereka sering pergi berenang di danau) [adverb of
frequency]

She carefully read the instructions. (Dia membaca petunjuk dengan hati-hati) [adverb of
manner]

She sings beautifully. (Dia bernyanyi dengan indah) [adverb of manner]

The children played outside. (Anak-anak bermain di luar) [adverb of place]

They arrived early for the meeting. (Mereka tiba lebih awal untuk pertemuan) [adverb of time]
