You are on page 1of 3

These are what I do when writing an egp essay.

FIRST

Glance at your topic serially; from number 1 to so on, as there are 10 questions.

SECOND

Give about 20-30 seconds of thought to each question, LOOK AT THE KEYWORDS VERY CAREFULLY.

THIRD

If you cannot generate at least 4 points, SKIP THE QUESTION. But as soon as you figure out 4 points
for a topic don't go through other questions as time is very less and very valuable. For example, If
you have 4 points for the 3rd question, you need not go through the remaining 7 questions.

FOURTH

When you finalize what question you want to write, do this;

(IN THE ANSWER BOOKLET, LEAVE THE LEFT PAGE FOR ROUGH SKETCHING, START FROM PAGE
NUMBER 2 i.e the right side)

On the left page, jot down the points for the question you chose.

FIFTH

Figure out if you are doing an argumentative or a discursive essay.

SIXTH

For argumentative; separate your essay like this INT-100

SB1-100

SB2-100

SB3-100

AB1-100

CONC-100

(100 is the word count for each paragraph, don't worry if you slightly extend it because that's why
Cambridge allows you to max 700, INT is the introduction paragraph, also 100 words, SB is
supporting the thesis, AB is against it, CONC is the conclusion)
For discursive; separate as follow INT-100

SB1-100

AB1-100

SB2-100

AB2-100

CONC-100

SEVENTH

Write down your points accordingly, for your essay; like SB1 or AB1 usually 4; (ON THE LEFT PAGE i.e
ROUGH PAGE)

EIGHTH

Make sure the points match the keywords of the question and are what the examiner expects.

NINTH

On the right side, Write down the question number and the question. Leave a line and start writing.

TENTH

For the introduction paragraph, go back into the history of what the topics concern. For example, if
the topic is about plants, Write a brief history of plants that includes, What is a plant, Why a plant is,
and How a plant affects the concern of the topic. After that state your points (SB1, AB1, etc). Write a
thesis statement in regards to whether the essay is argumentative or discursive.

ELEVENTH

For the body paragraphs there is a format I typically follow;

P- POINT

E- EXPLANATION

E- EXAMPLE

L- LINK

E- EVALUATE

Write your point, explain it, provide a suitable example, link it to the point, and evaluate the point.
That's it.

And when continuing with body paragraphs, USE CONNECTIVES which include but are not limited to;
Furthermore, Additionally, Also, Consequently, On the contrary, etc. Do not exceed more than 110
words for each body paragraph. This is for your convenience.

TWELFTH

In the conclusion paragraph, Only include your POINT (AB1, SB1, etc) DO NOT INTRODUCE ANYTHING
NEW; this is so as you ought to say everything in your body paragraphs. Link all of the points to your
thesis and it's done. Review for spelling & grammatical errors.

TO NOTE:

1)You cannot use the "&" symbol; you must write "and" and you cannot use contractions like can't
don't won't they must be stated as cannot, do not, will not, and so on.

2) The essay must not be in the first-person perspective, you cannot use the words Me, I, and Myself.
It's formal writing and CIE does not allow it. (For questions that have the keyword "in your country",
or "in your opinion", do not include a first-person perspective. Instead of writing "In my country,
Nepal, ............" you should write " In the country of Nepal, ..........."

3) Include the word count of your essay in the last sentence of your paragraph. And for the next
paragraph, add the preceding one.
