Tess Osonye Onwueme's Tell It To Women

INTRODUCTION
Tell it to Women tells the story of Yemoja, Ruth, Daisy and ths women of Idu. Daisy and Ruth,

modern women who tries to take advantage of the rural women in a quest to satisfy their

selfish desires.

THE PLAYWRIGHT

Tess Osonye Onwueme is a Nigerian female playwright. She is a political dramatist who rose to

prominence writing plays with themes of social justice, culture, and the environment. Through

her plays, she is able to use the theatre as a medium to showcase historically silenced views

such as African women, and shedding more light on African life.

Synopsis of the play

The play recounts the story of Yemoja, a semi-literate Idu woman and her journey to find a “a

better life." At the core of the play is the Better Life for Rural Women , a programme funded by

the government and spearheaded by Daisy and Ruth. They perpetuate their selfish desires

undee the guise of leading the women and liberating them from the impression of man. This

brings conflict in the village particularly between men and women including her husband and

father.

SETTING The production of Tell it to Women is set in post colonial Nigeria. It is set in Idu, a

cosmopolitan town and the city

GENRE

The production of Tess Onwueme is a satire.

CONFLICT

The major conflict is that of man against the society. Daisy and Ruth's beliefs and attitudes

contradict those of the traditional community.

DIRECTORIAL INTERPRETATION

The message of the play is to speak to happenings in the contemporary Nigerian theory. With

the discourse on feminist and queer theory being on the rise, the production aims to bring

these issues to the forefront and to concientize the audience.

DIRECTORIAL APPROACH

Transformation Directorial approach.

DIRECTORIAL STYLE

Brecht's Epic Theatre and Abdulrasheed Adeoye's Neo-Alienation. We applied certain elements

from both theories to stage oyr performance. These elements include:

Aesthetic of Theme Song and Systematic Dramatic Dramatization: The first song, “Intentional

Women” speaks specifically to the theme of the play which is to allow women take back their

sense of power and pride in womanhood. The players (actors) also fraternizsd with the

audience during the performance.

Photoramic/Caption Aesthetic: This played out in the use of cardboards to communicate with

the audience.
Brecht's Epic Theatre aims to bring about political and social change. By distancing itself from

its audience, epic theatre hopes to communicate meaning to the audience while awakening

them to their social reality.

Metatheatre: Thiis is one of the techniques of Brecht's Epic Theatre. At a point in the play, the

narrator decasted some actors and recasted new actors.
