The Future

 In English there are two future tenses. There is the future with ‘going to’ and the future with
‘will’.

Structure of the future with ‘going to’

verb to be ( present ) + going to + base form of the verb

Study these examples:

Carmen is going to go to New York next year.


Is Carmen going to go to New York next year?
Yes, she is.
No, she isn’t.
Yes, she is going to go to New York next year.
No, she is not ( isn’t ) going to go to New York next year.

Peter and John are going to study Spanish next semester.


Are Peter and John going to study Spanish next semester?
Yes, they are.
No, they aren’t.

Structure of the future with ‘will’.

will + base form of the verb

Study these examples:

Notes:

1. In the USA American usually abbreviate the future with going to. Instead of saying ‘going to’ they
say ‘GONNA’. This is used only in spoken English and cannot be used when you write essays.

e.g. Peter is going to buy a new car. = Peter is gonna buy a new car.

2. The future with ‘going to’ is much more used than the future with ‘will’.

We often use have to to say that something is obligatory, for example:

. The structure is:

In general, have to expresses impersonal obligation. The subject of have to is obliged or forced to act
