Az Zakāĥ is an obligatory worship and the third pillar of Islam. It was

Activity Lesson Proper:

- What is Az Zakāĥ?
Az Zakāĥ is an Arabic word which means an obligatory portion of wealth must
be released for the benefit of the recipients who qualify based on specific criteria
(nisab) and conditions. Zakah cleanses both the giver and his/ her wealth.
Az Zakāĥ is an obligatory worship and the third pillar of Islam. It was
mentioned in the prayer 28 verses of the Qur’an.
- The wisdom behind Giving Zakah
The following are the reasons for giving Zakah.
1. To cleanse the human being from the dirt of selfishness, greed and
stinginess and love of wealth.
2. To help the poor and the neighbor.
3. to build the social system wherein charity is given to those who need it
most. Zakah is a personal obligation to Allah to provide comfort and
assist the poor members of our community. It is not a legal entity.
4. To enable the wealthy member of the community to share their
income.
- Rule of Zakah
Zakah is an obligatory worship of a Muslim who owns wealth
subject to Zakah. Zakah must be taken from Muslims, male or female,
adult, or child, sane or insane.
Allah said in the Holy Qur’an:
“Take (o Muhammad) from their wealth az zakah (alms) in order to purify
them and sanctify them with it, and invoke Allah for them”. (At Tawbah
103)
Az zakah is a financial worship and Pillar of Islam. We cannot perform it
unless we have wealth. This is the reason why Islam encourage us
Muslims, to be lawful professions to gain wealth because if we are poor,
how can we give zakah?
Analysis Learning Task No. 3: Answer the following questions.
1. What is Zakah?
2. Why do we need to give Zakah?
3. How does the giver benefit in the practice of Zakah?
Abstraction Giving Az Zakah is a strong proof that Islam does not like poverty and
considers it as a malady that the Muslim society should be cured from.
- Prophet Muhammad said:
“The upper hand (giving hand) is better than the lower hand (receiving
hand)”.
Application Learning Task No. 4
