This document contains information about an upcoming quiz for a solid mechanics course, including two practice problems.
Problem 1 involves finding the normal stress and maximum normal stress on a given plane using a 3x3 stress tensor. Problem 2 involves sketching a Mohr's circle for given principal strains, finding maximum shear strain, determining strain gage orientations for positive normal strain, and calculating principal stresses using elastic properties.
The quiz allows one handwritten cheat sheet and has standard rules regarding late submissions.

ME 223 Solid Mechanics Autumn 2023 Quiz 2 (10 points)
31 Aug 2023 9 pm – 10 pm
Closed books closed notes. One A4 sized self-handwritten cheat sheet
permitted. Standard rules & regulations apply. Min 10% penalty applies to 1. Non-standard cheat sheets 2. Dropbox submission of answer book.
1. (5 points) At a point (1,1,1) in a 3D solid, the stress tensor is given as
150 50 0 % 50 75 0 ) 0 0 100
where all components are in units of MPa.
1a. Find the normal stress at this point on the plane with equation x + 2y + 3z = 6. 1b. Find the maximum normal stress and the plane on which it acts.
2. (5 points) The principal strains (in microstrain units) at a point in a 2D
solid are given by ϵ! = 100, ϵ" = −1000. 2a. Sketch the Mohr’s circle for this state of strain. 2b. Find the maximum shear strain at this point. 2c. Let θ be the angle (in physical space) of inclination with respect to the principal direction corresponding to the ϵ! strain. Find the range of θ in physical space such that a strain gage mounted along those inclinations will measure only positive normal strain. 2d. The material has these elastic properties measured from experiments E = 200 GPa, G = 75 GPa. Find the principal stresses at this point.
