In this depth study assessment, I was able to examine the science behind earthquakes and

their impact on structures. To meet the requirement of this task, I was required to design and
build a structure capable of withstanding the forces encountered during earthquakes and to
write a recount of the process that was followed. This task allows me to study and analyse
different structures, agencies and different functions to help me improve my knowledge of
the factors that affect the stability of structures and types of design and techniques that may
be used to create earthquake resistant structures.

The design and construction process of a seismic structure involves a logical series of steps,
each with a specific purpose to ensure a successful structure. To begin with, I did the depth
research to be able to understand, analyse the earthquake, earthquake resistant structures,
function of each structure design to prepare for the next step is to design earthquake
resistant structures.
Next, I was designing an earthquake resistant structure. It is important to learn more about
earthquake resistant facilities and how they work. I designed the structure with 4 floors and 1
base layer. This structure has 5 floors including the base and has the length of 50cm, 10cm
each.
After completing the design sketch, the next step was to collect materials that match the
function of each part in the design to prepare for the next step of building the structure. I
collected cardboard and bamboo sticks to use in building structure . I cut 5 cardboard of the
same size to create floors that have a length and a width of 15cm x 15cm. I also cut 24
bamboo sticks and glued them together to make 12 dampers with a length of 10cm each.
Then, I built this earthquake resistant structure according to the design. By using bamboo
sticks as dampers to secure the middle and bottom of the structure. I made the design part
of the shear walls out of cardboard and made the cross braces out of bamboo sticks and
glued them together. Shear walls and cross braces are structural elements that help stabilise
buildings during earthquakes. Dampers are designed to stabilise and intact buildings during
earthquakes and heavy loads that do not cause floors to collapse. The combination of these
forces helps the structures withstand the forces of earthquakes.
Finally, after the construction was done, I simulated an earthquake to check the strength of
the structure. When I finished the earthquake simulation, I realised that the shear wall and
the base of the structure were not strong enough to withstand the forces of the earthquake.
To fix the base, I used bamboo sticks to make dampers and pasted them on both sides of
each floor inside shear walls. Through logical steps, each step helps to ensure a stable
design and construction.

In conclusion, the design and construction of earthquake resistant structures is to gather

information about earthquake and earthquake resistant structures to apply what has been
learned to design and build this structure. By applying what I have learned to adjust and
correct errors to complete the structure. All the steps like in-depth research, design,
construction and modification are important steps that contribute to my earthquake resistant
structure. Through these steps, I investigated the structure and function of earthquake
resistant structures and demonstrated their important role in seismic practice. This project
has brought valuable practical lessons in understanding the importance of earthquake
resistant construction in our lives. It helps us better understand earthquakes and the damage
and loss caused by earthquakes to people and property.
