Introduction to Fishing

Reasons for a Workover
• Mechanical • Reservoir
• Replace completion equipment • Change producing horizon
• Gravel Pack
• Failure/corrosion • Convert to an injector
• Plugged • Mitigate sand production
• Integrity issue • Stimulate
• Fishing • Acidising
• Equipment lost in hole • Frac
• Abandonment
• Replace/install artificial lift • Cement Plugs/Squeeze
• Gas Lift
• ESP
• ESPCP
• PCP
• Bean Pump
Workover Operations
Workover Steps
1. Inspect wellhead and tree/hot bolt 7. Working inside casing
2. Kill well • Recover/mill packer
3. ND Xmas Tree/NU BOPs • Set cement plugs
4. Install HWOU • Perform intervention
5. Working inside tubing • Perforate
• 1.9” Macaroni 8. Run in new completion
6. Pull Tubing/Packer 9. Rig down HWOU
10. ND BOP/NU Tree & Flowline
11. Hand well over to production
Platform/Unit Dependent
Well/Workscope Dependent
Fishing Introduction
• Know dimensions of every tool you run in the well.
• Check what fishing gear you have available on board – what is
available in town.
• Remember drillpipe has hard banding – check how proud it is.
• If you got stuck
• Pulling up then go down
• Going down then pull up
Fishing
There are lots of fishing tools available the problem as always is choosing the right
one
Bumper Sub

• Hexagonal central shaft permits:

• Free movement of normally 20in up and down
• Full torque transmission
• Floating connection – allows easy determination
of PUW
• Allows weight of string to be bumped down on
fish below.
• Run below jar
Safety Joint

Coarse thread protected by O Rings

top and bottom will release with 40%
of tool make up torque
Fishing Jar

• Jar up only
• Can select the amount of overpull
• Slack off and mark pipe where jar
is fully closed
• By pulling up to 20,000lbs and
allowing oil to escape jarring can
be avoided.
• Pick up to maximum and also
mark pipe.
• Pick up to 50% of manufacturers
rating and wait for hammer effect.
• Then increase gradually.
Intensifier/Accelerator

• Run above the jar and Drill

Collars/Heavy Weight
• When jar fires it allows free upward
movement of the jar and Drill
Collars/Heavy Weight increasing the
jarring force
Fishing
External Catch
• Overshot with grapple catches outside of fish

Internal Catch
• Spear catches inside of fish

Junk Catch
• Junk baskets, magnets etc

Milling & Cutting

• Milling over or milling up a fish that can’t be caught
Bowen 150 Overshot
Spiral can catch larger OD than grapple in a given bowl size

Different Types of Overshot
Bowen 150 Overshot - Spiral

A Type Packer seals against outside of fish

allows circulation through fish

Spiral is a Left Hand Helix with wickers on

internal face. Can typically catch 0.5” larger
fish than a basket grapple for the same
bowl size.

Control stops grapple rotating but allows

grapple to move up and down and transmit
maximum torque
Basket Grapple
For a given Bowl these have a smaller ID catch – cylindrical body of Grapple is thicker

Inner seal seals against

fish OD between
grapple and mill control

Mill Control allows top

of fish to be dressed
off.

Outer seal between

mill control & bowl
Basic Procedure with Overshot
Catch
• Run maximum size of overshot possible
• Fish OD and shape will dictate the choice of grapple
• Get parameters just above fish – SOW,FRW,PUW with and without pumps
• Subject to the type of fish engage with rotation or not e.g. if
• RIH with pumps ticking over at +/-100gpm. Once SPP increases 100psi shut down
pumps.
• Slack Off 10Klbs and PU
Release
• Bump down to release wicker and then rotate to the right with slight upward
movement – do same at surface.
• If fish not captured go for a 1/8” smaller catch overshot
Accessories
• Hook Wall & Oversize Guides are used to catch fish in larger hole
sizes
• Itcoloy mill guide dresses off fish
• Itocloy mill extension – dress off fish – sits between guide and bowl
Short Catch Overshot

For short fishing necks

Bowen Wide Catch Overshot
• Extended Catch Range – The catch range is up to four
times greater than other overshots
• Reduced Grapple Inventory
• Efficient – Reduces number of trips in hole and non-
productive time (NPT)
• Versatile – Lower end connection is interchangeable
with all existing guides, mill shoes and other fishing
accessories
• Fit-for-Purpose Sealing Options – Available in high
pressure and standard pressure
• Increased I.D. of Top Sub and Extension Subs - Accepts
the maximum size of fish
• 18 in Fishing Neck – Allows increased number of
connection re-cuts
• Set Screws – Prevent connection back-off

WCOS Standard
Releasable Spears

• At depth once inside fish rotate the string 1 turn to the left.
• Pickup spear and engage fish
• To release bump down and rotate to right while picking up
Box & Taper Taps

Box Tap
• Can’t be released
• Need to run a safety sub above

Taper Tap
• Limited circulation
• Can’t be released
• Need to run a safety sub above
• Can’t run Eline through
Stuck Point
Stretch Example

Picked up to 56,000lbs marked string =A

Picked up to 66,000lbs marked string =B
Overpull = 10,000lbs
Stretch/Difference between A & B = 10in
Tubing is 3.5” = 9.2ppf
Stuck Point = 6,571ft
Accuracy = +/-150ft/50m
