SUMMARY
Modern masonry assemblies gen-
erally require more movement joints
or other engineered solutions to
accommodate or restrain movement
than earlier masonry wall assem-
blies. When following simple guide-
lines for placement of control joints,
expansion joints, and isolation joints,
designers can easily locate vertical
and horizontal movement joints—
even on complicated building enclo-
sure configurations.
To start the process of locat-
ing masonry movement joints,
first understand the overall inher-
ent movement characteristic of all
masonry materials used on the proj-
