contains five. These same combinations appear after the number for each Test Item on
the separate Answer Sheet, but they are in a diferent order. Yon will notice that in
each Test Item one of the five is nderlined. You are to look at the one combination
which is urderlined, find the same one after lhat item number on the separate Answer

DIRECTIONS
On the following pages there are 50
sentences. In each of the 50 sentences, the
frt word and the last word is omitted, and a blank space is provided in its place. You
are to pick out words which will 6Il thè blanks s0 that the
senvences will be true and
sensible. You are to choose your words to 6ll the blanks from liss of words given
with every question. An exanple sentence will make
it clear :
EXAMPLE X ..is to water as cat is to...
1.
continue 2. drink 3. foot 4. girl
A. drive B, enemy C, food D. industry
For the irnt blank, you are to selert a nunbered word out of the four-1,2,3,
given in the upper line, For the econd blank at the end of sentence, you tre
select one lettercd word out of the four-A, B, C, D-given in the second
line, Then
you have to mark this combination of two words selected (1A, 1B, IC, 1D,
2A, 2B, 2C,
2D, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D,
an
4A, 4B, 4C, 4D) on the separate Answer Sheet, by drawing a line
under the right combination,
Now notice the above example X, The sentence should read as, "Drink is to
water as cat is to food" "Drink" (No, 2) from the hrst line of the words, and "food"
(letter C) from the next line of words make a correct sentence. Hence on separate
answer sheet we draw a line under combmation 2C.
This is shown in the sa mple
Answer Shert given below
Now look at two nore exanples heaw :
EXAMPLE Y ...is to one as serond is to...
1. midlle 2 uecn 3. rain 4. first
A, two B. lirc C. object D, hill
The correct word for te ir: blank is the word "irt" which is numbered 4 and
tlhe correct word (or the eond blank is the word, "wo" which is lettered A, The
sentence will then read as, "6rst is to oe as second is two". A line has been drawn,
therefore, under the corrert combination 4A in sample answer theet helow
EXAMPLE Z ..is to miglt as brca klast is to..
I. tlow 2. gentle 3. supPer 4. door
A. in Iude B. inorning C, enjoy D. corner
The correct numibered word here i "supper" which is No. 3. The corrcct lettered
word for the second blank is "noramg" which is lettered B, The sentence than reads
as, "supper is to night as breakJast is to morning". The right combination is therefore
3B and therefore this conoination is aderlined in the sanple Answer Shect.

Now look at the pattern for Example Y anu the five choices for it. Note that when the pattern is folded,
the hgure must have two gray surfaces. One of these is a large surface which could be either the top or
bottom of a box. The other is a small surface which would be one end of the box.
EXAMPLE Y
Notice all the "boxes made from this pattern are correct in shape, but the sides which you see are
diferent. Some of these hgures can be made from this pattern while others cannot. Let us look at them.
Figure Ais correct. If the large gray surface is shown as the top, ther the end surface of gray
can be shown facing towards you.
- Figure B is wrong. The long, narrow side is not gray in the pattern.
- Figure C is correct. The two gray surfaces can both be hidden by placing the large gray surface
at the bottom and the gray end to the back.
- Figure D is wrong. The gray end is all right, but there is no long gray side in the pattem.
T Figure E is correct. One can show the box so that the large gray surface is at the bottom (25
it was in C), but with the gray end showing at the front.

So, you see, there are three figures (A,C and E) which can be made from the pattern in Example

Instructions for Preparing Individual Profiles
On cach pupil's report sheet record his raw scores and heir
percentile equivalents.
To construct a graphic profle:
I. Wih a pen or colored pencil make a small dash on each vertical line at the point
which corresponds to the percentile for that test.
2. For cach test draw a bar from the 50th percentile line to the small dash
the indicating
student's percentile rank. When many profles are to be drawn a Speedball
No. Al or Cl or some such broad-point pen is convenient for making a broad line
with a single stroke. Use of the indigenous kalam, cut to the required fatness, is
also suggcsted. If desired, such kalam may be obtaincd from the publisbers.
3. By using differently colored pencils or inks, the percentile profle based on diferent
group norms can be plotted on the same chart. For example, one might wish
to plot profiles of a twelfth-grade boy based on general norms for twelfth-grade
boys and also on special norms of twelfh-grade boys in a college preparatory
course. For further discussion of methods for plotting profles, see Section 3 of
the Diferential Aptitude Tests Manual,
The group on which the percentiles are based should be indicated below the words Norms
used." This is cxtrcmely important if the charts are to be referred to at some later date.
If the vertical distance betwecn the levcls of any two scores is one inch (equal to ten points
in the Standard Score clumn) or greater, it, is probable that a real diference exists between
the two abilitics. Diflerences between one-half inch and one inch are doubtful, and should
not be given serious consideration unless supported by other evidence. If the vertical dis
tance between any two scores is less than half an inch, it is probable that no important
diffcrence cxists betwcen the two abilities. (See Section 3 of the Manual.)
Two additional columns have been provided on the chart for the insertion of other pertinent
data which may bc available to the user.
Thla chart has been prepared for ue with tabulating machine equlpment. Any chool system whleh
wlahes le tilze tBM punch cards and desires information on the preparatten of carda and wiring ot
boarda may obtain thic by wriling to ihe Test Dvision of The Psychological Cor poratlon.
