7 GRADE
QUESTIONS

1- WHY IS THE PANAMA CANAL IMPORTANT?

R- To begin with, the canal is the main source of trade by

connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean, this
gives the possibility of being a short and cheap transit route
for ships in charge of transporting goods.

In addition, it is considered important because of the amount

of traffic it has, which increases day by day, such as the
transport of oil, food, industrial elements among others that
are of great importance for the world's maritime trade.

Second, its infrastructure is one of the most important,

modern, and complex of the 20th century. It is one of the
most highly engineered infrastructures in the region. In
addition, it was a handmade work by man, which also gives an
importance to the work done by them. Since most of it came
from the countries of the Antilles.

2- WHAT ARE THE STRUGGLES THAT PANAMA CANAL ARE

FACING?
R- The changes that have taken place at an economic level
and, above all, at an environmental level, are forcing the
authorities responsible for the Panama Canal to consider the
necessary changes for this infrastructure to maintain its
competitiveness.

The main challenge facing the Canal is the use of water. Each
ship that is towed through the gates is estimated to need
about 189 million liters of fresh water, of which 75 million
liters end up being lost at sea. This data is not problematic on
their own, because Panama is one of the countries that
receives the largest amount of rainwater in the world and
therefore its freshwater reserves were always sufficient.

However, in recent years climate change has led to a very

significant decrease in rainwater along with unusually high
temperatures that have lowered the level of lakes due to an
effect of evaporation.

3- WHAT ARE THE RIVERS THAT FEED THE PANAMA CANAL

WATERSHED AND WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED?
R- Among the main rivers in the Panama Canal basin are the
Chagres, Gatun, Boquerón, Pequení, Cirí Grande and Trinidad.
The upper basin of the Panama Canal is formed by the
Boquerón, Pequení and Chagres rivers, the latter is made up of
other tributaries such as the Piedras River and the Chico River,
which when joined together form the Chagres River. In
addition, there is a significant network of streams, streams,
and secondary rivers, as well as two lakes: Alajuela and Gatún.
WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST AGAINST THIS PROBLEMATIC
SITUATION WITH LACK OF WATER IN OUR COUNTRY?

1- Make the most of it and not waste water resources.

2- Laws must be enacted to prevent water pollution.
3- It is suggested to encourage people to recycle rainwater
and for this there are rainwater harvesting systems that are
very efficient.
4- It is suggested to encourage farmers to adopt agricultural
practices that use less water.
5- Preservation of water catchment areas.
6- People should contribute funds to support clean water
initiatives, especially in areas facing water shortages.
