1) How was your training to become a pilot?


As far as I know, my training to become an airplane pilot was very good and complete.
I performed my entire pilot training at Sorocaba flight school and this school had a quality in its training.
I had excellent flight instructors who gave me a good support and feedback.
I had a massive emergency situations training and the maneuvers were very accurate.
Nowadays I may say that I acquired a good situational awareness.

2) What has changed in the aviation after September 11th, 2001 tragedy?
Based on my knowledge, after that tragic day that left more than 3,000 people dead, security at the airports, especially in
the United States increased with a number of restrictions and procedures that became mandatory, such as restriction on
liquids, carry-on luggage, suspected terrorist list.
Passengers embarking in the United States must pass through the body scanner. The person enters the machine with
arms raised and the equipment makes a series of advanced X-ray images that can be seen under the clothes of the
passengers. The machine reveals any type of suspicious object that may be hidden in bodies or clothing.

3) Why is it important to study meteorology?


As far as I understand, it is important that a pilot is able to interpret any meteorological phenomena behavior that may occur
during the flight such as, ice accretion on the aircraft´s surface, thunderstorm, jet stream, severe turbulence and other
meteorological phenomena that may affect the safety of the flight.
For instance: A CB causes strong head wind and it can make the aircraft fall, severe turbulence compromises the aircraft
fuselage causing severe injuries to the passengers and flight crew members and ice accretion on the aircraft surfaces
increases aircraft weight and fuel consumption as a consequence it reduces aircraft lift and engine power. That’s why it is
important to study meteorology.

4) How often do you use English during flight?


As a flight instructor, I do not speak English with students and air traffic controllers during the flight because some students
do not understand English yet. Although, flight instructions are given to the students in Portuguese, some aircraft manuals
are translated into English and I help them understand it.

5) How was your first solo flight and where was that?
As a matter of fact, my first solo flight became unforgettable in my life. It was in a calm day at the Sorocaba flight school
and I wasn’t expecting it.
On that day my instructor told me to perform a flight in the air traffic circuit on a CAP- 4 aircraft and it was exactly what I did.
I performed a very good take-off, landing and taxiing from runway to the airport apron where the aircraft was parked. After I
shut down the engine, everybody congratulated me. I felt very happy and proud of myself.

6) Why should a pilot always keep situational awareness?


In fact, it is a good issue highly discussed in flight safety conferences.
It uses the concept that a pilot should be some steps ahead of the disaster. A pilot should be careful and attentive to all the
details related to the flight, in other words, a pilot who has a good situational awareness, he or she will be capable to
anticipate solutions for problems that may occasionally appear during the flight.
Lacking a good situational awareness is the primary factor that can culminate in an emergency situation and consequently
an accident.

7) What are your plans in aviation for the next 10 years?


As a matter of fact, I have been thinking a lot about it recently. I wish I could realize all my dreams in this brilliant career. I
also wish I could work at a big airline company and be a captain of a big airplane.
1) Please describe this picture to me.
Here, we’ve got a Picture of a white, low-wing, twin-engine turbofan aircraft. It is a Fokker-100 aircraft that has the
passengers carrying version because there are windows crossing the fuselage.
This aircraft belongs to Contact Air. A German air company.
Looking at this photo makes me believe that this situation happened at a big airport because it supports the operation of an
aircraft of this size.
This picture shows the plane on the runway and a fire under it.
I don’t know what could have motivated this situation, probably it was caused by a hydraulic problem on the main landing
gear. In other words, it didn’t extend completely resulting in an uncontrollable fire due to a friction of the tail with the RWY.
This situation happened during a landing operation, because it is possible to see the fully extended flaps.
I may say that this picture is rich in details.
I can point out a RUNWAY, TAXYWAYS, AIRPORT SIGNS, VEHICLES, BUILDINGS, WOODED AREA and MONTAINS.
I can not see in this picture OTHER PLANES, AIRPORT GROUND STAFF, JET WAYS and AIRPORT EQUIPMENTS.
Weather conditions looked good, as it wasn't raining, but there was a few MIST, HAZE or SMOKE spread out in the air.

A) What do you think happened before this picture was taken?
Before this picture was taken, I think this aircraft joined on the final approach, the pilots identified a hydraulic problem with
the main landing gear and they tried to deploy it several times. As they haven't succeeded to deploy it, so they decided to go
around. They requested to the air traffic controller priority for an emergency landing. Before this picture was taken, I also
believe before that the flight attendants assisted the passengers to assume the correct posture for an emergency landing.

B) What do you think these people were doing before this picture was taken?
Before this photo was taken I think the pilots were following a specific check-list trying to figure out and sort out the
problem, flight attendants were assisting the passengers to assume the correct posture on their seats for an emergency
landing, fire fighters were waiting the plane in emergency situation to assist them upon arrival and some of them were doing
some type of work at the airport.

C) What do you think was happening before this picture was taken?
Before this photo was taken I think the pilots were concentrating and performing all the tasks that a pilot needs to do
before an emergency landing, flight attendants were helping the passengers to assume the correct posture for an emergency
landing, fire fighters were waiting the plane in emergency situation to assist them upon arrival and some of them were doing
some type of work at the airport.
D) Can you create a short story based on this picture? Use your imagination.
It was a flight 294 from Frankfurt international airport to Belgrade international airport. The German company Contact Air
has faced up to its biggest challenge in history. A poor maintenance has led to an immeasurable damage to the air company.
Its F-100 joined in the pattern traffic circuit and the pilots following check lists performed all the tasks that a pilot needs to do
and flight attendants assisted the passengers assuming the correct posture on their seats to land. When the aircraft was on
the final approach the pilots identified a hydraulic problem with the main landing gear. In other words, it did not deploy
completely.
They tried to deploy it several times. As they haven't succeeded to deploy it, so they decided to go around climbing the
aircraft to a safer altitude to check the systems reporting this situation to the ATC.
The pilots followed a specific check list trying to figure out and sort out the problem. They requested clearance for dumping
fuel, emergency landing on a long runway to avoid a runway excursion situation, and assistance upon arrival.
Upon landing, luckily, firefighters extinguished the fire and flight attendants got operating the scape slides assisting the
occupants of the aircraft evacuating the plane fastly.

What do you think will happen next?
I believe, upon landing firefighters will put out the fire created by the friction of the fuselage with the ground, flight
attendants will operate the scape slides and will assist the passengers to evacuate the aircraft fastly; runway will remain
closed for hours because the competent authorities will initiate an investigation on the aircraft to gather information to
become aware into what would have motivated this event. After it, the aircraft will be taken to the air company hangar, the
runway will suffer a cleaning and the operations of the airport will be normalized.

4) What could have caused this situation?


I do not know what might have caused this situation, but this was probably caused by a hydraulic problem on the main
landing gear. In other words, it did not deploy completely. So, I would say that, a good investigation would be enough to
figure out what happened.

5) How could a pilot minimize the threats involved in this situation?


As far as I know, even pilots performing a good pre-flight inspection, it is practically impossible to identify a hydraulic
problem. Usually it occurs through small fluid leaks.
When an aircraft is on the final approach and the main landing gear does not deploy, the pilot should to go around climbing
the aircraft to a safer altitude to check the systems reporting this situation to the ATC. The pilot should also follow a specific
check list trying to figure out and sort out the problem, requesting to the air traffic controller clearance for an emergency
landing on a long runway to avoid an excursion situation and assistance upon arrival. It will help them to minimize the risks.

6) Now, I am going to read a statement to you and then you will have to tell me to what extent you agree or disagree with it:
“Dumping fuel and overlaying the runway with foam mitigate the risk of fire during an emergency landing.”
I totally agree with this statement. Duping fuel is very important to reduce the quantity of fuel inside the tank. Fuel causes
fire during a forced landing.
Overlaying the runway with foam can restrain the contact of oxygen with the fuel. These are important elements in the
equation that cause fire.
