1. Who was the first Mughal king?
Ans: At the age of 12 years, Babur (1526-30) inherited the kingdom of Farghana in Afghanistan. In 1526 he
entered in India and defeated Ibrahim Lodhi in battle of Paniput.
2. Who became the ruler after Humayun?
Ans: Akbar was born in 1542, at Umerkot in Sindh when his father Humayun was in exile. He inherited the
Mughal throne. Humayun’s wise general Bairam Khan guided Akbar till he was 18 years old. He ruled 1556 till
1605.
3. What is Jizya tax?
Ans: Jizya tax is a specific amount of money that a non-Muslim has to pay while living in an Islamic state.
4. What is Din-e-Illahi of Akbar king?
Ans: Akbar was an ambitious and politically clever ruler. He looked Hindus were in Majority in order to please
them he introduced new faith Din-e-Illahi becoming the existing beliefs.
5. Why did Shah Jahan make Taj Mahal?
Ans: When Shah Jahan’s beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal died, the emperor was heart- broken and built her tomb
the Taj Mahal.
6. Who was Sher Shah Suri?
Ans: His real name was Farid Khan. He ruled Humayun’s empire. He ruled from 1540 till 1545.
7. Who was Aurangzeb?
Ans: In 1657 Shah Jahan took very ill. His four sons fought for the throne. The youngest son Aurangzeb
marched northwards from Deccan towards Delhi and won many battles. His three brothers were captured, tried
then executed with their children.
8. Where did Shah Jahan spend his last days?
Ans: Shah Jahan did not die but Aurangzeb had him imprisoned in the fortress at Agra for the reaming eight
9. How did Mughal Empire come to an end?
Ans: When Aurangzeb died in 1707, at the age of 90, his sons were too old to take over the throne. The empire
became very weak and poor, despite the size. Eventually after 150 years the Mughal Empire came to an end.

1. Why did Sher Shah Suri succeed against Humayun? List some of Sher Shah’s reforms.
Ans: Sher Shah Suri succeeded against Humayun because Humayun was a weak ruler and faced opposition
from many nobles, plus Sher Shah Suri was a very good administrator and ruler. He achieved in five years what
others may not achieve even in ten or more.
Some of Sher Shah Suri’s reforms were:
 Appointment of honest and efficient officials;
 Building the Grand Trunk Road from Peshawar to Bengal;
 Establishing an effective and mobile army;
 Reform of the state money system, setting up mints;
 Passing strict but fair laws;
 Setting up the first real postal service.

2. Do you think Akbar as a popular ruler? Why?


Ans: Akbar was a politically famous clever ruler. He realized to be successful. He had to satisfy all the people
of hi kingdom, the majority being Hindus. He abolished Jizya tax. He empowered his army. He introduced
financial reforms and set up fairly administrative and legal system, that’s why he was famous among Muslims.

3. Aurangzeb ruled over a vast empire. Why did it collapse after him?
Ans: Aurangzeb’s empire collapsed after him because of the following reasons:
 There was continuous rebellion, due to which the state treasury was exhausted and the fighting forces had
suffered.
 Shivaji was a strong contender who continuously fought with Aurangzeb and managed to conquer and hold
on to most of the Deccan.
 Aurangzeb’s reform policies upset many people.
 When Aurangzeb died, his sons were too old—in their seventies—and too weak to manage the empire.
