PROBLEMS IN MULTICULTURALISM

In a diverse community composed of two or more ethnic, or cultural groups, conflicts are more likely to
occur because of:
1. Differences in group identity, which is shaped by the group's cultural values, history,
socioeconomic status, and perceived power.
 Examples of social identity include: race, ethnicity, gender, sex, socioeconomic status,
sexual orientation, age, religion/religious beliefs, national origin, and emotional,
developmental disabilities and abilities.

2. History of hostile interaction and discrimination.

 Cultural discrimination is when a person Is treated less favorably because of their
culture.

3. Misinformed stereotypes and perceptions caused by prejudiced attitudes and other external
influences.

 These stereotypes often oversimplify and generalize the traits, behaviors, or

characteristics of individuals within that group, ignoring the diversity and uniqueness of
each person. Stereotypes can perpetuate biases, reinforce prejudices, and contribute
to misunderstandings and discrimination.
