Indian Armed Forces have
made the supreme sacrifice
to defend the sovereignty
and integrity of our
country. The National War
Memorial thus represents
the gratitude of a nation to
its Armed Forces.

‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’

translates to the flame of
the immortal soldier in
Hindi. It refers to a
perpetual flame that burns
as a tribute to the soldiers
who sacrificed their lives
for the nation.
The Amar Jawan Jyoti is
a symbol of reverence and
gratitude towards the
courage and valour of
Indian soldiers who have
laid down their lives in
defence of the country.

The memorial comprises

including the Amar Chakra,
Veerta Chakra, Tyag
Chakra, and Rakshak
Chakra. It also includes an
Amar Jawan Jyothi (eternal
flame) a central obelisk,
and walls with the names of
soldiers who sacrificed
their lives.

How is the National War

Memorial different from
India Gate?

While India Gate

commemorates Indian
soldiers who died in World
War-I and the Third Anglo-
Afghan War, the National
War Memorial specifically
honours Indian soldiers
who sacrificed their lives
post-independence in
various wars and conflicts.
