We recycle, eat less meat, use the car less - but
what difference do all these decisions really
make? What is the baseline and what is the goal?
And how can one compare the effect of one action
to another?
We all want to make a

positive contribution
towards climate change,
but for most people it
can be hard to
know where to start.
Opportunity Because it is only when we understand the

consequence of our decisions, it becomes
possible to commit to changing them.
To try and answer this,

Doconomy together with the
UNFCCC secretariate, has
developed a carbon
calculator based on lifestyle
factors.

How does it
work?
The user answers 12-35

lifestyle questions covering the
most emission intense lifestyle
activities in four categories.
• Home
• Transport
• Shopping
• Food
Direct feedback is given

throughout the user journey.

User Journey
The user gets a rough estimate

in less than 5 minutes and an
opportunity to dig deeper and
refine their results.
The user is presented with

actionable insights:
• A result presented per

category.
• Tips and tricks in the order

corresponding to the users
most heavy category as.
The user can explore by

comparing to the 1.5-degree
target.

Methodology
The methodology was

developed together with the
UNFCCC secretariat using data
drawn from publicly available
sources, published by
specialized research institutions
chosen for their proven
credibility and robustness
The method used is

transparently accounted for in
the method document available
at the result page.

Scope, data and

calculations
• The Lifestyle Calculator currently covers

249 countries and regions which gives it
a global scope and allows for
comparisons of the result across
nations.
• Using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol as

an overarching framework. Covering all
Greenhouse gases covered in the Kyoto
protocol, calculated in CO2e.
• State and public emissions and

emissions from land use, land-use
change and forestry (LULUCF) in the
country have been omitted, as there is
little an individual can do to directly
affect these emissions.
• A ”cradle-to-gate” perspective has been

used for purchased products in order to
avoid double counting.
• Assumptions and averages used are

clearly stated in the methodology
• Country specific emissions have been

used when appropriate

Deployment options
API IFrame
The API solution can be incorporated in an app, or The IFrame solution is a packaged – plug-and-
a web page with a new frontend. This is an option play – version of the calculator, meaning it has
mainly for organizations with inhouse developers capabilities to customize the tool with regards to:
• Language packs – localization and language • Reskinning – customizing/theming the

calculator according to your brand (logo,
colors, font, imagery)
• Language packs – localization and language
• Actionable insights – tips and tricks for how

to reduce one's footprint

The Lifestyle Calculator API includes delivery and maintenance
API
services, e.g., set-up of the Lifestyle Calculator version,
maintenance of data sources and methodology. The minimum
term is 1 year. Product Annual license fee One-time fee
Language pack
Lifestyle Calculator API 12 000 EUR N/A
Language pack includes the translation of the Lifestyle Calculator.
Payment Terms Language pack N/A 3000 EUR / language

Commercial offering is valid 30 days from the proposal date.
Invoicing Terms
Net 100% of the final fees should be paid within 30 days after
receiving the invoice. Full terms and conditions are subject to final
agreement.
