Identification of the Learners’ Needs

1.1. Get ready to do N.A:

It is the first and the most essential process in ESP which enables the teacher to know

everything concerning the learners and their needs in fact this step provides the teacher with

rich data to decide about the nature of the course , how ? by simply asking why do you need

English for ? actually we have two types of needs Target needs(necessity lack and want ) and

learning needs .As an ESP practitioner I’m supposed to take the objective needs and the

difficulties ,which are in this case developing dentists’ writing skill, as a priority and then

concerning the wants I should give them a small part in my course to motivate them . Now

moving to the learning need which is about: how do you prefer to learn ?

in esp I give the floor for the learner to choose everything because it is a learner centered

approach. So in the needs analysis process the teacher should know the background

information about his learners which are going to orient him for where to put the course.

1.2. Do the needs analysis research:

Moving to this procedure in which he is going to collect data via many research tools

first by conducting an observation and an FGD then moving to the questionnaire including

closed- ended questions, also a semi-structured interview, a placement test to identify their

proficiency level, a progressive test and finally achievement test

2. Setting goals and objectives

1.2. Use the The N.A Results :

Now I have the results between my hands , such results are going to be turned into

realistic goals and attainable objectives which should be matched and restricted to the

learners’ needs and consistent with language content.

3. Conceptualization of the course content :

At this stage I start to think in a concert way by thinking what fits my goals and

objectives . I’m going to think of tow things the language features and the domain or the

content matter it means what are the topics that should be tackled, topic that are related to

their domain ‘dentistry’.

4. Selection and development of materials and activities

Here I select the appropriate materials and the relevant activities that fit the content , but

according to what I’m going to select ? according to the learners’ neesds , language features

and the subject matter( the dmain) the most important features of esp materials

appropriateness, effectiveness , feasibility and the main one is authenticity because in ESP

I’m supposed to put the learner in a real life situation .

5. Organizing the course content and activities:

here I’m going to organize my course content and materials into specific schemata based on

two processes building and recycling

6. Evaluation

I evaluate the effectiveness of my course according to 3 norms with the expect with checklist

with pilot testing my course this is a pre-evaluation, also the evaluation is going to happen in-

teaching through progressive test , and post-teaching through achievement test or proficiency

test finally asking whether th course fulfills the needs of the learners or not the answer is

going to show me the extent of the effectiveness of my course An ESP practitioner is a

researcher because he is conducting a research to know the needs of his learners but here
