Here are the stories of four people under 20 who have become their own boss.

A Jacob, 15
Although I’d always wanted to be a computer
programmer, I never thought I was clever enough.
Then I had an idea for an app and, with a simple
program, I created a game that helps you memorise
words. I uploaded it to the app store and now it’s one
of the most popular language learning apps. I’ve even
set up a company to sell my app, although it’s only me
at the moment. It’s not easy managing a company and
going to school but I’m learning a lot about business
and I’m the only student who has a permanent job
with a salary!
B Destiny, 19
No one believes that the sports car outside my house
belongs to me. They all say, ‘Come on! How can you
afford a car like that?’ The truth is, I managed to buy it
because I’ve got a successful company. It might not
sound glamorous but we provide cleaners for offices
and schools. When I left school at 16, I knew that I
wanted to be my own boss, so I decided to go into
business as a cleaner. It hasn’t been easy and I’ve had
to work long, hard hours but my clients have always
been happy and business just keeps coming. I’ve got
more than 50 full-time staff and I can offer them as
much overtime as they like.
C Flora, 17
Just a year ago, I was taking my final exams and I
didn’t know what to do next. But then everything
changed. I started posting videos online showing
people how to make their own jewellery. I made
things that were a bit strange like earrings that looked
like smart phones and people went crazy about them.
My videos got loads of followers and I even got ‘likes’
from celebrities. Since then, I’ve been absolutely
run off my feet with orders and I’ve had to hire two
assistants. It’s amazing to think how my life could have
been so different if I hadn’t taken up jewellery-making.
D Caleb, 16
I had a part-time job serving coffees and teas in a café.
One day the chef was unwell so I ended up standing in
for her. Making cakes was a hobby of mine so I made
my favourite coffee cake and added it to the menu. I
shouldn’t have changed the menu but I’m pleased I did
because it was a hit! It was gone in no time and soon
the customers were asking for more. When the chef
came back, she asked me to keep making the cakes
and they soon became the fastest-selling dessert in
the café. It was then that I had the idea of selling them
myself on the internet and now I supply them to cafés
and supermarkets all over the country.
