MOVING TO VIETNAM
AT THE AGE OF 3

MY EARLY YEARS IN VIETNAM WERE
TRANSFORMATIVE, SHAPING MY WORLDVIEW
AND FOSTERING AN EARLY APPRECIATION FOR
CULTURAL DIVERSITY. THIS MOVE, INITIATED BY
MY PARENTS FOR CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, LAID
THE FOUNDATION FOR ADAPTABILITY AND
CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS RETURNING TO SOUTH
THAT HAVE STAYED WITH ME. IT WAS DURING
THIS TIME THAT I FIRST EXPERIENCED THE JOY
KOREA AT AGE 9
OF MAKING FRIENDS FROM VARIOUS THE DECISION TO RETURN TO SOUTH KOREA AT
THE AGE OF 9 SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCED MY
BACKGROUNDS, SPARKING A LIFELONG
EDUCATION AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT. THIS
INTEREST IN CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE FROM
FAMILY CHOICE NOT ONLY IMPACTED MY
DIFFERENT CULTURES. LANGUAGE SKILLS BUT ALSO INSTILLED
RESILIENCE AND A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF
MY KOREAN HERITAGE. THE EXPOSURE TO SOUTH
KOREAN EDUCATION AND SOCIETAL NORMS
DURING MY FORMATIVE YEARS CONTRIBUTED TO
STARTING HIGH MY SENSE OF IDENTITY AND HELPED SHAPE MY
SCHOOL IN CANADA PERSPECTIVE ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURAL
ROOTS.
THE MOVE TO CANADA FOR HIGH SCHOOL MARKED
A PIVOTAL TRANSITION INTO ADOLESCENCE AND
INTRODUCED ME TO ACADEMIC CHALLENGES IN A
NEW COUNTRY. THIS SHIFT, DRIVEN BY MY
FAMILY'S PURSUIT OF BETTER EDUCATIONAL
OPPORTUNITIES, WAS A STEPPING STONE TO
INDEPENDENCE, IMPROVED ENGLISH
PROFICIENCY, AND EXPOSURE TO DIVERSE
ACADEMIC SUBJECTS. THE CULTURAL MELTING POT JOINING THE SCHOOL
OF CANADA BROADENED MY HORIZONS,
NURTURING A CURIOSITY FOR GLOBAL AFFAIRS
DEBATE TEAM
AND A DESIRE TO CONTRIBUTE TO A MORE JOINING THE SCHOOL DEBATE TEAM BECAME A
INTERCONNECTED WORLD. DEFINING MOMENT AS IT REFLECTED MY KEEN
INTEREST IN PUBLIC SPEAKING AND CRITICAL
THINKING. THIS DECISION, INFLUENCED BY
PERSONAL EXPLORATION AND THE SUPPORTIVE
SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT, LED TO
IMPROVEMENTS IN COMMUNICATION SKILLS,
INCREASED CONFIDENCE, AND EXPOSURE TO
DIVERSE VIEWPOINTS. THE CAMARADERIE
WITHIN THE DEBATE TEAM NOT ONLY
ENHANCED MY SOCIAL SKILLS BUT ALSO
FOSTERED A COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT THAT I
