1. Introduction to Biomedical Engineering by John Enderle, Joseph
Bronzino Academic Press
• It is a field that has been around for decades, but it’s one that continues to transform
and evolve. This challenging field refers to applying engineering’s approach and
innovation to the field of medicine and healthcare
•Professional societies play a major role in bringing together members of this diverse
community to share their knowledge and experience in pursuit of new technological
applications that will improve the health and quality of life of human beings.
• Intersocietal cooperation and collaborations, both at national and international levels, are
more actively fostered today through professional organizations such as the Biomedical
Engineering Society (BMES), the American Institute of Medical and Biological
Engineers (AIMBE), and the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) of
the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Human Body System
Human Physiological Signals
• Physiology is the science that deals with the function of the living organism and its organ and
of the physics and chemical factors and processes involved.
• Bioelectric potential is actually ionic voltages produced as a result of the electrochemical
activity of certain special types of cells. And these iconic voltages can be converted to electric
voltages so that they can be measured and displayed and can be used for the diagnosis and
treatment of diseases.
1) ECG ( Electrocardiogram) : It is a test that checks for problems with the electrical activity of
your heart
2) EEG (Electroencephalography) : Detects Electrical activity of the brain using electrodes at
scalps
3) EMG (Electromyography) : Health of the muscles and the nerve cells that control motor
neuron
