SIMPLE PAST
The past simple, also known as "past simple" in English, is a verb tense used to
talk about actions that concluded in the past. It is the basic tense to express
actions completed in the recent or distant past. It is formed with the simple form
of the main verb and "did", the simple form of the auxiliary verb "do".

The main purpose of the past simple is to talk about an action that concluded in
the past. It is not the duration of the action that matters, but rather when it took
place. It is used for complete actions in the past, and is equivalent to the past
imperfect and past indefinite in Spanish.

FORMATION OF THE PAST SIMPLE

To form the past simple with regular verbs, the infinitive of the verb is used and
the ending "-ed" is added. This form is the same for all people (I, you, he, she, it,
we, they). For example:

• I walked to the store.

• She played the piano.
• They visited the museum.

In the case of irregular verbs, the simple past form does not follow a regular
pattern and must be learned individually. Some examples of irregular verbs in the
past simple are:

• I went to the party.

• She ate dinner.
• They saw a movie.
USE OF THE PAST SIMPLE

The simple past is used to talk about actions that occurred in a time before the
current one, either in the recent or distant past. It is always used to refer to when
something happened, and can be associated with certain temporal expressions
that indicate:

Frecuencia: often, sometimes, always

• I sometimes walked home at lunchtime.

• I often brought my lunch to school.

Un tiempo determinado: last week, when I was a child, yesterday, six weeks ago

• We saw a good film last week.

• Yesterday, I arrived in Geneva.

Un tiempo indeterminado: the other day, ages ago, a long time ago

• People lived in caves a long time ago.

• She visited her grandmother the other day .

The simple past tense in English is a verb tense used to express actions
completed in the past, regardless of their duration, and is formed with the simple
form of the main verb and "did." Its use is associated with temporal expressions
that indicate when the action occurred.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE GRAMMAR RULES

The past simple in English is used for actions completed in the past. It is formed
with the simple form of the main verb and "did" as an auxiliary verb.

For regular verbs, "-ed" is added to the infinitive; for irregular ones, the shapes
must be learned. It is associated with temporal expressions such as "yesterday"
or "last week". It is essential to talk about past events, descriptions and routines.
English has 12 tenses, with 4 in each tense. The past simple is used to talk about
past and finished actions, and the auxiliary verb "did" indicates that the action
occurred in the past.
