The main purpose of the past simple is to talk about an action that concluded in
the past. It is not the duration of the action that matters, but rather when it took
place. It is used for complete actions in the past, and is equivalent to the past
imperfect and past indefinite in Spanish.
To form the past simple with regular verbs, the infinitive of the verb is used and
the ending "-ed" is added. This form is the same for all people (I, you, he, she, it,
we, they). For example:
In the case of irregular verbs, the simple past form does not follow a regular
pattern and must be learned individually. Some examples of irregular verbs in the
past simple are:
The simple past is used to talk about actions that occurred in a time before the
current one, either in the recent or distant past. It is always used to refer to when
something happened, and can be associated with certain temporal expressions
that indicate:
Un tiempo determinado: last week, when I was a child, yesterday, six weeks ago
Un tiempo indeterminado: the other day, ages ago, a long time ago
