Chocolate comes from cocoa trees. They first grew in Central America and South America about
100 million years ago on the slopes of the Andes Mountains. People probably ate cocoa beans
in Central America 15,000 years ago. Our word "cocoa" comes from the Quechua or Inca word.
Now cocoa trees grow in many places, especially in Africa. Cocoa trees can only live in hot,
rainy places near the Equator. They have big orange fruit, the cacao pods, which look like
a football and grow from the branches. If you look inside the cacao pods, you can see the
beans. Each pod can have 30 or 40 beans. These beans are really good for you because
they have lots of vitamins and minerals but they're not sweet.
Farmers pick the beans and dry them. Then, they send them to the factory where they
make chocolate. But cocoa beans are not all the same. If you mix different kinds of beans,
you get different kinds of chocolate. Sometimes it takes twelve different kinds of beans to
make a certain kind of chocolate.
Cocoa is very good for you because it has a lot of vitamins and it gives you energy. But
chocolate has sugar, which isn’t so good for you. So if you eat a lot of chocolate, you
can get fat.
