At 3.34 am on 27th February 2010, a powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake


occurred just off the coast of central Chile. The earthquake occurred at
the destructive plate margin where the South American plate is
subducted by the Nazca Plate. The earthquake was followed by a series
of smaller aftershocks.

Tsunami warnings were issued as waves originating from the epicentre


crossed the Pacific Ocean at speeds of around 800km per hour.
