Pearched on an arc of

called the “Ring of Fire”
that is why Indonesia is
prone to earthquakes

sent via text message
lasting over 30 minutes
after the earthquake.

tsunami warning after the earthquake,
hundreds of workers trapped in their

How are different people (students, farmers, labors, and office
employees) affected when natural event strike your community?
Who would be the most affected?

Everyone near the affected area

were the most affected. More than
70,000 homes were destroyed/damaged
by the magnitude 7.5 earthquake and
more than 2,500 people were injured and
almost 75,000 displaced.
Does a reported natural phenomena affect
people all the time?
Yes, we might think that we
would also be affected by the
phenomenon that has been
reported and we can't help but
feeling nervous as well.
How strong are the most damaging events?
List five examples.
• A tsunami of 5.5 meters / 18
feet
• 76 aftershocks
• 2,087 died ; 1,084 missing
• Triggered landslide which
killed mass of people
• 500 million worth of damage to
infrastructures
How big should be a natural phenomenon be for it
to be considered hazard? Does size even matter?
If an earthquake generates a large
enough shaking intensty that structures like
buildings, bridges and dams can be severely
damaged, and cliffs and sloping ground
destablished, it will be considered as hazard. The
type of hazard depends on the strength of seismic
activity, along with such factors as local
topographic and built features, subsurface geology
and groundwater. A large earthquake will always be
followed by a sequence of aftershocks.
Why do people live in areas affected by a
natural hazard?
Because people were clueless
and they don't know that their place
is hazardous. Just like in Indonesia,
people that lived near Sulawesi,
didn't know that the epicenter is near
their place.
How could people prevent disasters when a
natural hazard strikes?
There are slight possibilities that
can prevent earthquake to become a
disaster especially when people weren't
prepared by recalling what they have
learned during earthquake drills and
orientation, it could lessen the possibility
of hazard becoming a disaster.
CONCLUSION:
Define hazard and when does a natural phenomenon considered as
hazard.

It is considered hazard when it

affects the society or individual. Just like what
happened in Indonesia, the natural
phenomenon that occur can be considered as a
hazard because properties were damage and
many innocent lives were at stake or affected
by these phenomenon.
