BIO112: Tutorial Activity 1

(Students were assigned to read Chapter 5: Cells: the working units of life pp.
101- 102 and Chapter 28: Plants without seeds: from water to land in their
textbook, Life: the Science of Biology in preparation for the discussion)

1. Show the major groups/clades of plants and how they have been subdivided.

2. What do you understand by the term tracheophytes?

3. Using your answer from the question above and the number of groups/clades
of plants that belong to the tracheophytes make some comments as to what
you think could be the reason for this high number compared to non-
tracheophytes

4. In our survey of plants why is it important that we study the Algae?

5. How have algae played a role in life on earth?

Maybe we should add a question on what is a plant?
