Type: Speech about people

Specific purpose: To inform people how things work in most Filipino families.
Thesis statement: “The toxic undercurrents within a Filipino family cultures,
characterized by stifling expectations, communication barriers, and the
perpetuation of harmful behaviour.”

Today I want to address a delicate aspect of our culture - the existence of

toxic elements within Filipino dynamics. While families are typically regarded
as the cornerstone of our society, it is essential to acknowledge instances
where this foundation becomes a toxic culture.

In some Filipino families, there exists a toxic culture characterized by

excessive expectations, emotional manipulation, and a stifling sense of
control. This toxicity often comes from rigid traditional beliefs that dictate and
decides for them on how one should behave, whom they should associate
with, whom they should respect by force, and what career path they should
pursue.

This pressure can lead to family individuals to sacrificing their own dreams
and happiness for what the elders expects and dictate them to pursue for the
sake of familial approval. This culture of toxicity can stifle personal growth,
creativity, and individuality, creating an environment where one’s worth is
measured solely by meeting the societal expectations.

Moreover, the toxic dynamics are fueled by the extensiveness of gossips,

judgement, a lack of open communication, and understanding. This
environment can be emotionally draining, forcing individuals to keep their
struggles and fears, to themselves and perpetuating a cycle of silence and
emotional distress.

Its essential for us to recognize and address these toxic elements within our
family culture. Encouraging one another to have open communications,
embracing diversity of thought, and fostering an environment that values
individual growth can help break free from the shackles of toxic family culture.

In conclusion while family is undeniably an important aspect of a Filipino

culture, its crucial to promote a culture within families that nurtures
individuality, support personal aspirations, and prioritizes mental and
emotional well-being. By fostering healthy family dynamics, we can create a
strong bond within our family, with trust, understanding, and open
communication. We can became a more resilient society that celebrates the
richness of diversity within our Filipino heritage.
