33 KHz CHANNEL SPACING

Engineering Support Status: Open
PURPOSE
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has recommended the implementation of 8.33
KHz VHF channel spacing in order to increase the number of VHF channels in congested areas.

The 25 KHz channels remain active on some channels so that the ACARS operation remains
unchanged. Regulatory agencies in Central Europe have mandated the ICAO recommendation
since 07 October 1999.

The purpose of this article is to give AIRBUS operators the technical solutions that could be
applied to their fleet.

FACTS

The 8.33 KHz implementation involves the modification or replacement of the VHF transceivers and
associated control boxes.

The a/c modification consists of a minor wiring change for the activation of the 8.33 KHz function.

AIRBUS solutions are presented in following tables.

NOTE: all proposed VHF transceivers comply with the FM immunity requirement.

RETROFIT POLICY
AIRBUS decided to split the 8.33 KHz implementation into three different modifications for a given
aircraft:
a. Install 8.33 KHz VHF control boxes (also called RMP and operating at 25 KHz only)
b. Install 8.33 KHz VHF transceivers (operating at 25 KHz only)
c. Activate the 8.33 KHz VHF spacing

Dedicated Service Bulletin has been issued for each above three steps.

Therefore, the airlines must initiate a Request For Change/Retrofit Modification Order (RFC/RMO) for
each of them contacting their Upgrade Services Sales Manager.
INTERCHANGEABILITY

RMPs interchangeability (8.33 KHz):

A330/A340:
RMP C12848AA01 is two way interchangeable with RMP PN 899-0850-004.
No AIRBUS SB is required for installation of RMP C12848AA01 (iaw AIPC chapter 23-81).

A319/A320/A321:
RMP C12848AA01 is two way interchangeable with RMP PN 899-0850-004, as long as HFDL function
is not activated on subject aircraft. No AIRBUS SB is required for installation of RMP C12848AA01
(iaw AIPC chapter 23-13).

NOTE: all new RMP P/Ns to be certified by AIRBUS will be designed to comply with 8.33 KHz

VHF transceivers interchangeability

The VHF transceivers certified by AIRBUS can be split into 4 different categories (ref table for details):

INTERCHANGEABILITY TABLE

Regulations applicable to a given aircraft

Old P/N Neither FM Immunity nor 8.33 kHz FM Immunity only FM Immunity plus 8.33 kHz
New P/N a b c d a b c d a b c d

(*) 02 if the aircraft is neither equipped with an ATSU nor with an ACARS.
03 if the aircraft is equipped with an ATSU.

The interchangeability codes 01*, 02*, and 03* are given for the complete set of VHF transceivers, and do not reflect the intermixability between the VHF PNs.

The intermixability is authorized as a temporary solution and the two following conditions shall be met:
 the VHF PNs to be installed on the aircraft shall belong to at least the same category as the replaced VHF PN.
o This means that a VHF PN of a category above (a < b < c) meets this requirement.
 the VHF PNs to be intermixed shall be from the same vendor.

The above information concern the VHF PN certified by AIRBUS on the aircraft type concerned by this matter.

* Interchangeability codes:
NOTE: The following mixability/interchangeability conditions require prior embodiment of AIRBUS modifications/SBs that cover both the installation
of VDR PN 822-1047-030 and the associated wiring modifications (ARINC 750 compliance)

1. On aircraft equipped with ATSU, VHF Data Radio (VDR) PN 822-1047-030 and VHF transceivers PN 822-1047-020 are interchangeable and intermixable
provided the transceiver installed in position # 3 is a VDR PN 822-1047-030.

2. On aircraft equipped with ACARS, VDR PN 822-1047-030 and VHF PN 822-1047-020 are interchangeable and intermixable provided a VHF PN 822-1047-020
is installed in position #3 (ACARS-VDR interface is not certified by AIRBUS).

3. On aircraft neither equipped with an ACARS nor with an ATSU, VDR PN 822-1047-030 and VHF PN 822-1047-020 are interchangeable and intermixable.
