INMARSAT A, B, M, FLEET 77:
Procedure for using the antenna positioning table
Given below is the general procedure for using the Antenna Positioning Tables
(Tables A5.1- A5.4) to find the elevation and azimuth required to point an MES antenna
towards a selected satellite. Examples 1 to 13 on the following pages illustrate the use
of the tables.
1. Find the ship's latitude and longitude, using the available navigational
equipment.
3. Determine whether the ship is North and West of the satellite, or South and
West, or North and East, or South and East. Use the appropriate table: (Tables
A5.1- A5.4) between the ship's longitude (rounded to the nearest
degree) and the satellite's longitude. Express this difference in longitude
rounded to the nearest 5 °.
6. Apply the values obtained to the appropriate table, to find the required azimuth
(the upper figure) and elevation (the lower figure). These are the settings
required for the MES antenna. (see Tables A5.1- A5.4).
7. Set the MES antenna to the required values of azimuth and elevation, referring
if necessary to the manufacturer's instructions. Check that the MES gives a
"ready indication (ex.S/N ratio). If so, your MES is now ready to track the
satellite as the vessel moves.

the B1 character is a letter (A-Z) identifying the transmitter coverage area,
the B2 character is a letter (A-Z) for each type of message.
B3B4 is a two-character serial number for each message, starting with 01 except
in special cases where the serial number 00 is used.
The transmitter identification character (B1) is a single letter allocated to each NAVTEX
shore station transmitter. NAVTEX receivers allow the operator to accept or reject messages
from any station, based on this single letter code.
The subject indicator character (B2) is also single letter code which serves to identify the
message subject. NAVTEX receivers also allow the operator to reject certain messages based
on the subject indicator character. However, messages concerning Navigational Warnings,
Meteorological Warnings, and Search And Rescue information can not be rejected.
