ASH WEDNESDAY BIBLE LESSON:
REMEMBERING OUR NEED FOR GOD

Ask your children if they know what is special about Ash Wednesday.
Explain that it is a special day that marks the beginning of the season of
Lent, which is a time of reflection and repentance in preparation for
Easter. On Ash Wednesday, many Christians receive ashes on their
foreheads as a symbol of their need for God's forgiveness and guidance.

BIBLE STORY:
Read Psalm 51:1-2, which is a prayer of repentance and humility. King
David, was acknowledging his sinfulness and asking God for forgiveness
and restoration. Ask your children if they have ever done something
wrong and felt sorry for it. Explain that just like King David, we all make
mistakes and need God's forgiveness.

TALK ABOUT THE ASHES:

Ask your children if they know what ashes symbolize. Explain that in the
Bible, ashes were a symbol of mourning, humility, and repentance. In
some stories, people would put ashes on their head or wear sackcloth as
a sign of their sorrow for sin. Ask your children if they have ever felt
sorry for something they did, and how they expressed their sorrow.
Explain that on Ash Wednesday, receiving ashes on our forehead is a way
of showing our humility and repentance before God.

ACTIVITY:
Have your children gather around you to receive ashes on their forehead.
As you apply the ashes, say the words, "Remember that you are dust, and
to dust you shall return." This is a reminder of our mortality and our
need for God's grace and mercy. .

PRAYER
End the lesson by praying together, asking God to help us remember our
need for Him, and to guide us in our Lenten journey. Remind your
children that Lent is a time to focus on our relationship with God, and to
seek Him with a humble and repentant heart.
