Sustainability Pillars Summary Analysis
A summary analysis rating Political factor 10% , Social factor 20%, Economics factor 20% and the Environmental
factor 50% out of 100% from the Sustainability Pillars. The purpose of this summary analysis is to prove my
thoughts, prioritizing more investment on the environment contribute greatly to the success of the country in terms of
strengthening the country’s weaknesses, preventing the threats of the country's success and attracting those
opportunities that will enhance the country's development while improving the country's strength. And also, to
implement the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio and the adoption of Agenda 21 by the international community that
“development does not only apply/relate to economic, social dimensions, and politics, but also environmental factor
of sustainability.

In assessing the sustainability pillars of politics, social issues, economics, and the environment, a rating of 10%, 20%,
20%, and 50% respectively has been assigned. This distribution is based on the significance and interconnectedness
of these pillars in ensuring the success and development of the country while mitigating weaknesses, threats, and
seizing opportunities.

Beginning with politics, it is accorded a 10% rating. Politics plays a vital role in shaping policies, regulations, and
governance structures that govern a country. However, its lower rating suggests that while politics sets the foundation
for societal progress, it is not the sole determining factor of a country's success. A balanced distribution of power,
efficient administration, and inclusive decision-making processes are essential for political stability and growth. But,
Politics in itself, does not have any power in making the country successful, but rather jeopardizing the country’s
success by power greed and corruption. It is cleared that, corruption is in every governance, and because of such
threats, it deserves a rating of 10%.
Next, social issues are assigned a 20% rating. These encompass various aspects such as education, healthcare,
poverty alleviation, human rights, and societal cohesion. Recognizing the importance of social well-being, this
rating highlights that addressing social issues directly impacts societal harmony, individual empowerment, and
overall national progress. Success hinges on upholding basic human rights, fostering inclusivity, and creating a
positive social fabric that encourages diversity and equal opportunities. Without a healthy environment, healthcare
will not be relevant. Without environmental education and awareness, poverty alleviation will mean as good as
nothing, because those natural recourses that have important roles in shifting the country from poverty to success will
be damaged, because we don’t know the value or the use of those recourses given to us by God.

Also, without prioritizing the environment, human’s right will be violated instead of prioritizing the rights of every
citizens. Today, anthropogenic activities are increasing because we seeking opportunities, developments, and to meet
our social well-being which are all good, but ignoring sustainable practices, which are likely to effect the healthcare
of the people, going against the rights of the people as per their right by law. The National Environmental Policy of The
Republic of Liberia, Approved On November 26, 2002, Published by The Authority, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Monrovia,
Liberia, April 30, 2003 and I quoit, “Every citizen of Liberia has a constitutional right to live in a healthy environment and
the obligation to keep the environment clean”; but, anthropogenic activities will jeopardize those privileges when
addressing social issues and not complying with international standards for sustainable development, and when they
do comply with international standards for sustainable development, it means, the environmental factor of
sustainability is of more priority.

So, based on my analysis, the social issues deserve the rating of 20%.
The environment holds the highest weightage with a rating of 50%. This underscores the utmost significance of
environmental sustainability for the country's success and long-term viability. Safeguarding natural resources,
reducing carbon emissions, adopting clean energy practices, and addressing climate change are all integral to
sustainable development which is the top priority of the country’s success. Prioritizing the environment enhances the
country's resilience, reduces vulnerability to ecological threats, and enables access to green technologies and
investments.

A healthy environment also supports social well-being, economic growth, and political stability by mitigating risks
and enhancing the quality of life for citizens. Because of the potential support of having a healthy environment, it
serves as the root balance of social well-being, economic growth, and political stability by mitigating risks and
enhancing the quality of life for citizens. The 50% on the environment, indicates it deserves more priorities then the
other pillars of sustainability.

By assigning the highest percentage to the environment, we acknowledge that it is intrinsically linked to the success
of the country as a whole. A proactive approach towards environmental sustainability not only strengthens a nation's
weaknesses but also prevents potential threats to its development. Furthermore, prioritizing the environment attracts
opportunities such as investment in renewable energy, conservation initiatives, and eco-tourism that contribute to a
nation's overall progress.

Emphasis:
For a successful accomplishment on addressing environmental issues for the success of the country, through PESTEL
analysis, the legal factor must be active and effective through the enforcement of these international environmental
principles listed below:
The precautionary principle: "When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment,
precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause-and-effect relationships are not fully established
scientifically".

The polluter pays principle: “Those who produce pollution should bear the costs of managing it to prevent damage
to human health or the environment”.

Individual responsibility: “It is the responsibility of all persons, corporations and states to maintain the ecological
processes. Further, access to environmental resources carries attendant responsibilities to use them in an ecological,
sustainable, economically, efficient, and socially fair manner”.

Consideration for our neighbors: “Each nation/individual should ensure that activities within its own boundaries
do not cause harm to the environment in their neighbors/neighboring countries”.

Promoting sustainable development implies development that satisfies our present needs without jeopardizing the
availability for future generations to satisfy theirs. These principles should be monitored and followed by the
government and every citizen of the country.

In conclusion, this rating distribution reflects a comprehensive understanding of the interdependence of sustainability
pillars. While politics, social issues, and economics are indispensable for the nation's success, allocating a significant
portion to the environment underscores its pivotal role in ensuring long-term prosperity, safeguarding against
risks, and capitalizing on opportunities. Striking a balance among these pillars fosters holistic development,
addresses weaknesses, and promotes the overall strength of the country.

BETWEEN THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUCCESS IN THE COUNTRY.

MY DESK STUDY IS IN RELATION TO MY COUNTRY, LIBERIA.

From my research and statistics, I have come to realize that in order to be a successful country in terms of sustainable
development growth, we must invest more in the environment. Fostering the growth and love of tourism as a country we ought
to be, because of our biodiversity hotspot, as Stephen Rodriques, UNDP Liberia President Representative said “Liberia contains
the highest remaining portion (42%) of the upper Guinea forest, which is regarded as one of the three lungs of the world
extending from Guinea into eastern Sierra Leone, and eastward through Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana into western Togo.
The forest is characterized by high endemism, bosting over 2000 plant species, 600 bird species, 75 reptile species, and 150
mammal species”, which are as good as enough to boost our tourism activities. With our strength as a nation, diverse natural
recourses (Diamonds, Rubber, Iron, Oil, Gold.

Strong agricultural sector which is 30% of gross domestic product (GDP) and forestry sector, 11% of gross domestic product
(GDP). Financial support from the International Community (IC), member of the Economic Community of West African
States (ECOWAS), which comes with lots of benefits. Substantial expatriate remittances which covers 25% of gross domestic
product (GDP), fifth-largest recipient in the world. Reach with all of these natural resources that we have from the
environment, and support from our international partners, we can make LIBERIA a better Country that we always wanted and
desired, but if we don’t invest in developing our environment which has all of these good things to offer, and the ability to lead
us to being a successful nation, we are as good as like a child of a king who doesn't know the values and benefits of being a
king’s son, and you know what that means. The supply graph is indicating, we need to invest more on the environment, because
it has about 50% to offer to the success of this great country, Liberia. This is the time to supply more efforts on the
environment, and value what it has to offer to every citizens that sees it necessary in protecting and conserving our ecosystem,
natural recourses, and biological diversity at large.

INVESTING IN THE ENVIRONMENT LEADS TO MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES

The increase investment on the environment will result in various positive outcomes, including a high
demand for job applicants, increased tourism activities, economic growth, a quality education system,
better performance in social well-being, and many more opportunities. This principle aims to
demonstrate its validation through logical reasoning and supporting evidence.

HOW?

Job Creation: Investing on the environment necessitates the implementation of sustainable practices,
development of renewable energy sources, and conservation efforts. These initiatives require a skilled
workforce, leading to a high demand for job applicants. According to a report by the International Labor
Organization (ILO) states, “the green economy has the potential to create millions of new jobs globally.
This increased employment opportunity directly benefits individuals and the overall economic growth”.
Tourism Growth: An improved environment, characterized by preserved natural landscapes, cleaner air and water,
and well-managed ecosystems, attracts tourists. This, in turn, drives the growth of the tourism industry. A study by
the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) estimates that, “investments in sustainable tourism practices can lead
to a 4-11% annual increase in tourist arrivals and a corresponding boost in revenue”. This increased demand for
tourism activities creates employment opportunities, stimulates local economies, and enhances the overall quality of
life.

Economic Growth: Investing on environmental protection and sustainability measures can have a positive impact
on a nation's economic growth. Numerous studies have shown that the environmental sector contributes greatly to
GDP growth and generates substantial economic activity. For example, a study by the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) suggests that, “environmental investments have the potential to increase a
country's GDP and improve productivity”. Moreover, sustainable practices can result in cost savings by reducing
resource consumption and minimizing wastage.

Quality Education System: An emphasis on environmental education within the education system can lead to a
more informed and environmentally conscious society. By integrating environmental topics into the curriculum,
schools can create opportunities for students to learn about sustainability and conservation. This, in turn, generates a
knowledgeable workforce capable of implementing sustainable practices and finding innovative solutions to
environmental challenges. An educated population is vital for the country's long-term development and
competitiveness.
Social Well-being: Investments on the environment have a direct positive impact on social well-being. Preserving
natural habitats, reducing pollution, and improving public health contribute to a higher overall standard of living.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the link between access to nature, improved mental health, and societal well-
being. Additionally, sustainable practices, such as green urban planning and the promotion of public transportation,
enhance the livability of cities and improve quality of life for residents.

CONCLUSION
Through logical reasoning and evidence-based reasoning, the proof supports the principle that increased investments
on the environment leads to a wide range of opportunities. These include job creation, tourism growth, economic
development, a quality education system, better social well-being, and various other positive outcomes.

Therefore, policymakers, governments, and organizations should recognize the potential benefits of environmental
investments and work towards their implementation to create a sustainable and prosperous future.

ENVIRONMENTAL-STRATEGY ACTIVITIES FOR 2024-2030 GOALS

STRATEGY #1a: CREATION OF BUFFER ZONE,

IMPLEMENTATION OF ZONING LAWS AND REGULATION

ACTIVITY #1a

Creation of buffer zones in Liberia to mitigate the negative impacts of pollution on the environment in zoning areas is
important in protecting and preserving the ecosystem.

1. Identify Suitable Buffer Zone Locations: conduct a thorough assessment of the zoning areas in Liberia to identify
appropriate locations for buffer zones. Consider factors such as proximity to pollution sources, ecological significance,
and community involvement.

2. Establish Legal Framework And Regulations: Develop and implement legal frameworks and regulations to support
the creation and management of buffer zones. This includes defining the objectives, boundaries, and required buffer
width for different zoning areas.

3. Conduct Stakeholder Consultations: Engage with local communities, indigenous groups, government agencies, and
relevant stakeholders to gather input, address concerns, and ensure collaborative decision-making during the
establishment of buffer zones.
4. Develop Land Use Plans: Prepare comprehensive land use plans for the buffer zones, considering ecologically sensitive areas, wildlife
habitats, and strategies for reducing pollution. Ensure that these plans are aligned with existing zoning regulations.

5. Implement Vegetation Management: Design and implement appropriate vegetation management strategies to enhance the effectiveness
of buffer zones. This may involve planting native vegetation, creating wildlife corridors, and maintaining a diverse and resilient ecosystem.

6. Enforce Polluter Accountability: Implement strict monitoring systems to hold polluting industries accountable for their activities. This
should include routine inspections, emission controls, and penalties for non-compliance with environmental regulations.

7. Conduct Public Awareness Campaigns: Educate local communities, businesses, and the general public about the importance of buffer
zones and their role in mitigating pollution effects. Promote sustainable practices and encourage individual responsibility in minimizing
environmental impacts.

8. Establish Monitoring And Evaluation Programs: Develop robust monitoring and evaluation programs to regularly assess the
effectiveness of the buffer zones in mitigating pollution impacts.

This will help identify areas of improvement, make informed decisions, and adapt strategies accordingly.

9. Collaborate With International Organizations And Experts: Seek technical assistance, knowledge exchange, and funding opportunities
through collaboration with international organizations, experts, and donor agencies. This can help leverage additional resources and
expertise to support buffer zone development and management.

10. Regularly Review And Update Buffer Zone Strategies: periodically review and update buffer zone strategies based on new scientific
findings, changing environmental conditions, and community feedback. Ensure that the strategies remain effective and adaptive to future
challenges.

By undertaking these activities, Liberia can establish resilient buffer zones that effectively reduce the negative impacts of pollution on the
environment and ensure sustainable development in the zoning areas.
STRATEGY #1b: PROMOTION OF AFFORESTATION AND REFORESTATION
Activity #1b

Afforestation and Reforestation play an important roles in mitigating the negative impact of pollution on the environment.
according to my research, afforestation and reforestation can contribute to these various pollutions reduction:

1. Air Pollution: Trees absorb carbon dioxide through the process of photosynthesis. Greenhouse gas, a major factor
responsible for climate change. By increasing forest cover through afforestation and reforestation, more carbon dioxide is
effectively removed from the atmosphere, mitigating air pollution. Forests act as natural filters, trapping and reducing the
concentration of particulate matter, such as dust and fine particles, which are harmful to human health. The leaves and
branches of trees help capture these pollutants, resulting in cleaner air.

2. Water Pollution: Afforestation and reforestation help prevent soil erosion and promote water infiltration. Tree roots bind
the soil, reducing runoff and keeping pollutants from reaching water bodies. This leads to improved water quality and
reduced sedimentation, which can harm aquatic ecosystems. Forests also serve as natural buffers by intercepting and
filtering rainwater. They help prevent pollutants, such as nutrients and chemicals from agricultural runoff or industrial
activities, from entering rivers, lakes, and groundwater sources

3. Noise Pollution: Trees and forests act as sound barriers, absorbing and deflecting sound waves. By planting trees in
urban areas, along highways, or near industrial zones, afforestation and reforestation projects can help reduce noise
pollution and create more peaceful environments.
4. Biodiversity Conservation: Afforestation and reforestation efforts contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. Planting
indigenous tree species and restoring natural ecosystems provide habitats for a wide range of plant and animal species,
which in turn enhances biodiversity and ecological balance.

5. Climate Regulation: Forests regulate local and global climates. Trees provide shade and decrease ambient temperatures
in urban areas, reducing the need for air conditioning and energy consumption. Forests also influence rainfall patterns
through transpiration, releasing moisture into the atmosphere, which can enhance rainfall in certain regions and help
regulate regional climate. It is important to note that while afforestation and reforestation can effectively mitigate pollution
impacts, they work best in conjunction with efforts to reduce pollution at its source. Implementing sustainable practices,
promoting renewable energy, and adopting greener technologies are vital for comprehensive pollution control strategies.

we are not seeing the value of what we have and the importance of investing in the environment, sustainably, implementing
every sustainable practices from the government down to every citizens, prioritizing the safety, social well-being of all
citizens and the environment at large.
Liberia Environmental Management Org.
(LEMO)
Dear Stakeholders,

We are writing to propose an environmental management plan that we believe will benefit not only our organization, but also the
environment, communities and the country as a whole.
As a responsible organization, we recognize the need to reduce our environmental impact and contribute to a sustainable future.
We believe that by implementing an environmental management system, we can achieve this goal while also improving our
operational efficiency and reducing costs.

Introduction:
The world is facing a major environmental crisis due to the increasing amount of industries and waste generated by anthropogenic
(human) activities. The waste generated by human activities is polluting the environment and causing harm to our planet. Plastic
pollution is one of the major environmental problems that the world is facing today. Plastic waste is not only polluting the
environment, but it is also harming marine lives and causing water pollution. Therefore, there is an urgent need to address these
issues on waste pollution, plastic pollution, noise pollution, light pollution, water pollution, and pollution at large which are
leading to environmental degradations. Lack of environmental education and awareness, lack of enforcement and implementation
of those international environmental principles are crucial challenges that we are faced with today and must be handle with
urgency. I believed, with the implementation of these plans mentioned above, we can achieve having a better country, Liberia, that
we’re all desiring and longing for.
The issue of improper waste management, plastic pollution, and poor water pollution control are global problems that require
immediate attention. The proposed strategies outlined in this proposal will help address some of these issues of waste
management, plastic pollution, water pollution and environmental degradations.

The implementation of these strategies will help reduce the amount of waste generated by anthropogenic activities, reduce the need
of single-use plastic products, and prevent water pollution. Therefore, it is important to implement these strategies mentioned
above to ensure a sustainable future for our environment.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Chester Y. Jlah
